Oil Change

Post by cwicker1 »

I bought this really great 1999 S70 for my kid. He wanted my 2001 Honda I used for work instead, so I got the extended warranty the dealer (Nissan) offered. I drive so much (2000 miles per month, minimum) that I was using coupons in the book by the exact specific mileage and have run thru the book of coupons in a very short time. Now this past Saturday, I had the car up on ramps in my driveway and had a good look under the car and everything looks good, some scratch marks on the leading edge of the oil pan. This look minor to me, nothing else; but was impressed with for my first time under the vehicle with the design of the under carriage, workmanship and the way the engineers did some things. But, even after looking at the photos in the Haynes repair manual I have, I haven't figured out what special tool is required to get the cover off the oil filter. I would like to start doing the oil changes and general maintenace work myself. At the rate of miles I put on, these oil changes are need every six weeks. Paying a shop for this sort of thing would get expensive rather quickly.

Thanks for your response.

and you can get the filters from FCP Groton, the Mahle cartridge filters I think.

They sell that plastic oil filter wrench at Wal*Mart or any car parts store. Mine is orange in color, so probably made by Fram.. I have to use it to change the oil in my 98 VW.

I agree...you can get the filter wrench just about everywhere...but make sure it fits right. The first one I got was slightly loose and it slipped and I had a bear of a time getting my oil filter housing off (on our V70...uses the same one) www.fcpgroton.com is your friend. Buy what you need from them in bulk if possible to reduce shipping costs. Namely you'll need the filters (comes with a new gasket) and aluminum crush washers for the oil pan bolt. I bought a magnetic one from them when I first bought my car. Make sure the gasket goes on over the threads of the oil filter housing just like the old one was. The oil plug is tightened to 28 ft lbs while the housing is tightened to 18ft lbs.
