Timing belt on a V90, Same as 850?

Post by gwoiler »

My brother is going to try changing the timing belt on his V90. He used to do his 740 all the time. Is the 6 cyl timing belt the same as changing one on the 5 cyl in an 850? Are there any directions to be found to do the V90 belt?

Thanks,
Glenn

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same, but the process should be nearly identical as far as lining up the marks. I think it helps to have the camshaft locking tool to make sure nothing moves.

Unlike the 200-940s you don't have any leeway for error. Also, the tensioner might be a goofy hydraulic part versus a spring, so be prepared for that (but I'm not 100% certain, having never changed the belt on my 960.)

Yes, it will be the same as an 850 with a hydraulic tensioner. Biggest pain in the ass is getting the lower tensioner bolt out, make sure you take it out first and leave the top one tight so there will be as little tension as possible on the lower bolt. The large weight that goes around the dampner gets it the way so you cannot use a socket on the lower bolt and neccesitates using a wrench and turning it one flat at a time. Otherwise it is pretty much the same old deal as an 850 only you will have alot more room once you get the fan motor and shroud up and out of the way.

Thanks I'll pass this along to my brother. I think he was going to take all his parts to his mechanic and have it done. I told him it was trickier than hiw old 740 wagon.
