Posted this in case anyone else comes across the same problem.
2003 S40, 120k Miles. CEL came on Solid, then eventually cleared itself. Over a period of a few days. Car then started flashing Check engine Light during hard acceleration. engine seemed to be misfiring as well, also under hard acceleration.
Changed spark Plugs using OEM Volvo plugs, set Gap to .30. Installed 2 new Ignition coil units (OEM Volvo). Test drove car, very smooth, problem totally solved.
