Heater Core repair: Technically can I move this to my firewa

Post by 98T5 »

I have be thinking about this heater core repair on my 93' 940 since it started to show the typical signs of failure so, I unplugged the hoses and re-routed them together. After, further thought, I realized that the heater core is a self contained unit and those two hoses(with the heater valve in between) are the only connections, and the heater core, when working, doesn't drip any water, because all the water is flowing through the tubes and the fins are releasing the excess steam. So, TECHNICALLY< I can buy the heater core, and create a bracket inside the engine bay, and it will sitll work, thus, not have having to go into the dashboard at all .and just plug up the existing holes for good. Do you agree with this idea, or is there something I'm missing??? Can this work??

Any info is appreciated.

The purpose of the heater core is to transfer engine heat (that is outside the firewall!) to cabin air. (inside the firewall) If you hang the HC on a bracket inside the engine compartment, how are you going to transfer heat to the cabin of your car? If you do not need heat (for example you live in Hawaii) just leave the hoses like you have them, bypassing the heater core. But if you need a heater several months of the year, replace the heater core, or replace the car. Technically speaking, replacing the car MIGHT be easier and/or cheaper.

If you don't care to have heat you need not do anything. The engine does not rely on heat transfer from heater core to cool engine. In fact the heater core water flow is stopped by the heater valve whenever the temp knob is moved to full cold.
