volvo headlight switch cover lights 2000 v70

Post by piesia »

Hi,

My 2000 v70 had a bulb out in the headlight selector switch.

http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/2000/v ... witch.html

I was able to slide out the part and replace the longer lightbulb (the same used in many of the dash switches like the rear window defroster) and that bulb works now. There is a 2nd bulb next to it that I though lit up when the first didn't (in the upper left corner, which is the parking light indicator). I removed this bulb by mistake, thinking that it was the burned out bulb. when I saw it looked ok, I put it back.

it looks like the same bulb used in the inside instrument illumination dial (which is to the right of it).

I first thought I needed to remove the cover plate on the headlight selector switch to get to the bulb (not true), and I also thought adjustment to the daytime running light screw was needed to remove it. (not true either)

So I was fiddling with the daytime running light screw (shown on page 24 in this manual: http://www.volvoclubthailand.com/man/pd ... l_2000.pdf), without realizing what I was changing

do I need to fix this daytime running light screw somehow? I've tried adjusting it in both directions to the maximum, but I don't see the green light anymore. I now understand that I shouldn't have messed with it -- I guess it's not impossible that something happened to the bulb when I removed/replaced it, but I think that I messed things up unnecessarily playing with the screw. right now, I left the switch at 10:00 and 4:00 (running mid upper left to mid lower right) -- this is discussed on page 28 of the manual, but none of the other positions of this automatic daytime running light switch are labeled in the manual.

Does anyone know what positions are used for this switch? Does anyone have a recommeded setting for the usa? does anyone know why the green parking light indicator light might have gone out.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Best regards,

P.

I believe this is what you're looking for in regards to the DRL screw positions.

http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/199 ... 2.htm#pg26

I always left my DRL on, in the hopes that people could see my car coming down the road and not pull out in front of me. Does it work? Who knows...people do it anyway. I do the same thing with both new cars, always leaving the DRL on.

My green light has never worked. :D

yes, jblackburn, thank you! that's exactly what I was looking for (my version only displayed squares).

I've selected the second option -- 8:00 and 2:00, which -- according to that page -- gives me daytime running lights when the headlights are burning. The bulb used for the green light might be the same bulb used in the 816 radio that I have -- I don't have any spares to test, at the moment.

I think it might be OEM P/N 9148908, which is the radio bulb.

so far, the parking lights seem to light up when the headlights are on. I agree with you that I think that's safer.

thanks, again, for your help!

best regards,

P.

This is the skinny of the DRL screw:

1. DRL screw at 6 ---> 12 o'clock position. No matter what you do with the knob, the HL is on all the time.

2. DRL screw at 8 ---> 2 o'clock position.
a- Knob at 9 o'clock: HL OFF
b- Knob at 12 o'clock: HL ON.

Anyway, I use option 2 because I want some control over the HL.
However, over the last 10 years, the knob always stays at 12 o'clock position, and it is ON all the time.

However, I know I can turn it off any time I want.

First of all the DRL screw is 10:00 OFF 12:00 ON, not 8 and 2 or any of those other weird combos.
You may be better off to just buy a good, used switch
I may have one if you want it

JRL,

There are essentially 3 choices, I use #2:

EDIT,

JRL was right, I set my screw as in option # 3 to turn DRL off.

just for completeness, I used a bulb for an 816 radio to replace the 'green' parking light bulb -- volvo part number 9148908, and interior instrument light bulb -- volvo part number 9148906 -- to replace the headlight bulb in this part.

Both bulbs now work (I picked switch position two for switch A (8 and 2 position), daylight running lights are enabled.

It's now working fine, thanks for all your help, everyone!

Best regards,

P.

Next time use "Radio Shack" 99-cent bulb, it is cheaper than Volvo bulb.
