I've watched as my full-tank fill up costs have gone from the $40s to $50s to $60s. Yesterday I broke $70. I've had my 850 for almost 13 years, so one of the two cost variables has remained constant.
Top-grade 91 octane combined with running this tank of gasoline unusually low = 16.9 gallons going in. I try to never let the fuel go this far down for obvious reasons, but I pushed it getting my son to preschool (Denver) from my mom's house (Castle Rock) on time.
I don't like to fuel up with my son in the car. If I leave him in his carseat, he's not happy and I'm afraid of the possibility -- however remote -- of a fire and getting him out of the seat. If I take him out of his carseat, it's dangerous because, well, it's a gas station and cars are zipping in and out of the lanes with visibility blocked for everyone by other cars, pumps, and advertising.

I remember my first 60 buck fillip....15 years ago in France filling an ecobox! Reminder of how cheap fuel is here compared to ROW..
On the gas station issue....the danger from traffic far outstrips the negligible risk of a fillup fire, especially for a RPI ( reasonably prudent individual) like yourself. No smoking, xy-acetylene torches or Tiki lamp rebuilding while filling, ground nozzle against car (I think they are all grounded now anyhow) and gas station fires are pretty much relegated to the movies.

$70 is something us Brits can only dream of, my V70 is costing close to £90 ($135) these days for a full fill which is why I am switching over to run the car on LPG as it costs half that of normal petrol - Mike

Abscate, great points, thank you. Fill up fires are also found on YouTube, but I understand your point, the this vs. that should be measured on a relative scale.
Mike, again, good point. That too is relative. $135 is brutal. Has it gone up about 3x since 2000 for you also?
OT: my ex just got 39mpg on a 1600-mile roundtrip with a medium load in her 2012 VW Sportwagen TDi (diesel). Not bad, especially now that diesel < gasoline in cost here in the states, after a ~12 year inversion of that tradition.

Probably a 60% (ish) increase for UK since 2000, it certainly hasn't tripled as it has always cost considerably more than the fuel does in the USA. My V70 auto 140BHP MY2000 managed just short of 40MPG a couple of weeks ago going to an owners club meet, nice and steady speed running on the cruise control but that isn't how I normally drive it.
I am more used to high 20s to low 30s MPG wise, the LPG conversion isn't cheap but the attraction in the UK is much lower price you pay at the pump (nearly half) so at UK prices it will pay for the cost of the conversion in about five months, after that it is cheaper motoring so worth considering as long as LPG is easy to obtain , with five local stations all selling the LPG it isn't a problem and on a long range trip I can always revert back to the more costly petrol at the flick of a switch - Mike

Ugh, I've had that happen before. I ran my tank almost dry once - she took 17.2 gallons - and gas was over $4 for regular. I'd always used 89, so it came out to be about $72.
My girlfriend's old V6 Camry had a bigger tank than than the Volvos do - 20 gallons. Do not miss that car one bit.
As much as I miss the power of a big engine, having 2 4-cylinder cars is freaking awesome at the pump. The mileage will only keep getting better with smaller engines/turbocharging and direct injection...once they get it right. I might even consider a diesel next time around.

I routinely pay $75 to fill up my S80 T6. Problem is I only get 15-16mpg. I'm pretty close to stage 0 with the exception of maybe o2 sensors but I'm sick of getting less than 300 miles to a tank of 18 gallons.
I'm pretty sure the ETM needs a cleaning but I'm not getting any codes. Any idea how I can get it close to the 17/22 that they got when new?
I'm sure city driving in Los Angeles doesn't help with mileage or cost but 15mpg is what I got in my Ford Explorer.
