Using a 2.4L engine in a 2.3L Turbo

Post by wagone »

The head gasket in my new(to me) '96 850 Turbo decided to blow today. I don't really have the time to replace the gasket right now. I do, however, have a wrecked '97 850 GLT, which has the 2.4L low pressure turbo engine in it. If I swap the 2.4L into my Turbo, would it be possible to run it with the stock tune if I also swap the injectors and the turbo? I know the block can't handle as much boost, but I need to get my car running quickly.

If you substitute the turbo and injectors from the 2.3 it will be fine. Actually better than fine. You'll need to run premium fuel if you are going to drive it hard as it will have a higher compression ratio and a bit more tendency to spark knock.
The thinner cylinder wall thickness is fine if you don't set boost pressure higher. With the larger displacement and higher compression ratio you will not need more than stock boost to end up with a more potent engine.

The AME '96 and '97 850 did not come with 2.4, all engines where 2.3 or 2.5.

'96 AME 850, all the turbo charged engines are 2.3, all the NA engines are 2.5.
The turbo engines for '96 are B5234FT, B5234T4 and B5234T5

'97 AME 850, ,the two turbo charged engines where B5234FT and B5254T.

I'm getting this information from VIDA, there is conflicting information from different sources.
You should look at the ID plates imprinted on the engine block of both engine to determine what you have.

Mechanical the replacement engine will fit. Based on the information you have posted so far, it is highly probable Jimmy's answer is correct, the systems will play well together. For a more defendant answer, read and post the engine family IDs off both engines.

If by 2.4 you mean the engine from a 1997 low-pressure turbo 850, then yes people do it all the time. Keep the turbo and injectors from the 2.3 setup when you drop it in. If you mean some other engine, just tell us where it came from.

However dropping in a 2.4 NA (non-turbo) 850 engine is not a good idea.

Based on your info in the first block, YES
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Wiki says
The B5254T is a 2.5 L (2,435 cc) straight-five. It is turbocharged and intercooled with a power output 193 PS (142 kW; 190 hp)[153] at 5100 rpm,[110] with 270 N⋅m (200 lb⋅ft) of torque at 1800–5000 rpm.[110] It is equipped with Bosch Motronic 4.4 engine management for model years 1997 and 1998.[154] It is equipped with Bosch ME7 engine management for model year 1999. Boost pressure is limited to 6 psi (41 kPa).[155]
Applications:
1997[103] Volvo 850 badged as 850 AWD or 850 2.5T

Chiltons lists B5254T as VIN 56 LPT 2,4 for 96, 97 850 GLT in American Market

The bore and stroke are the same as the code 55 N/A 2.4l whiteblock, the 2.5 labeling was a market limits thing, I imagine.

This is all semantics, as stated above, look at engine series, if it was originally a B52X4T (or FT) then it is a turbo motor.
