S70 Speaker sizes.

Post by Ozark Lee »

What have you used for replacement speakers in the 70 series doors and the rear deck for a S70?

My daughter blew a couple of the rear speakers - one door and one deck I think - and she wants new ones for her rapidly approaching birthday. I was at the Pick N Pull lot yesterday and tried to sang a couple of the 8" rear deck speakers but they were bad in both of the S70s they had in inventory.

Crutchfield shows nothing for the rear deck and they call for 5 1/4" in both the front and rear doors. It looks to me like 6 1/2 " might would work better in the doors but for the rear deck I have no idea what to buy short of building up an adapter plate.

On all of them it looks to me like I will need to carve up the old frames to use as a mount for the new speakers.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Lee,
Rear door speakers are full-range coaxial 8 ohm 6.5" speakers. Volvo part # HT-371 "for the kit". Also shows # 3533 919-1.

Rear deck speakers are full-range coaxial 8 ohm 8" speakers. Volvo part # HT-470 "for the kit". Also shows
# 3533 920-9.

As you mentioned, there is a good chance that any used rear deck speakers you may find will be in bad shape do to degradation from sun exposure.

One of the challenges will be to find full-range (coaxial) speakers that are available with the 8 ohm impedance. When I upgraded my audio system I installed 4 ohm speakers in place of the 8 ohm speakers in the rear doors after being told that it would probably be ok...seemed to work. I don't know whether it would be ok to replace both the rear door and rear deck speakers with those that have 4 ohm impedance. Maybe someone else could chime in.

That being said, check Parts Express or Sonic Electronics. For example, Sonic Electronics sells Precision Power PPI PM.658 that are 6.5" full range 8 ohm speakers that would be perfect for the rear doors. Finding something for the rear deck is going to be more challenging, but I would call both companies to check with their specialists. They may say that with the factory HU, speaker impedance is not a huge issue.

Watch mounting depth for the rear door speakers. Good luck.

If home stereo experience is any indicator, then the ohms shouldn't matter. The lower the impedance, the more juice is needed to push them. So if the factory head/amp has enough power (which it should) the larger and only issue will be finding ones that fit.
