Question about oil cooler and other unknown part.

Question about oil cooler and other unknown part.

Hello!

97 850glt auto

Put the car up on ramps today, saw a couple oil spots on the floor and wanted to see where it was coming from. I found a loose hardline on the bottom of what i think must be the oil cooler If that is an oil cooler, i can only assume lots of oil will come pouring out when i loosen the fitting to push the line back on and reclamp it right?

Secondly, still under the car, between the back of the engine and the firewall, on the passenger side behind the belts, I saw this little spout looking that, kinda looks like something should be attached to it, but i am not sure. Please advise!

Top picture is your transmission oil cooler I believe. Good time to perform a trans oil flush if you have to open it up to tighten. Take care of this ASAP - a failed trans can make your car a parts car real quick.

Bottom picture - that nipple is the coolant flush line for draining the block of coolant for major rebuilds - you can ignore it, as long as you take care of your engine.

Thank you very much! I just did a drain and fill last week, i was going to wait for about 100 miles to do the next one, but i suppose like you said i should do it immediately.

on a drain and fill, usually only about 4 quarts comes out, im assuming the other 4 quarts or so are here in the tranny oil cooler?

Im not the expert flushing automatics as I have a custom transmission with a 1Gb transmission controller - my right hand...

Have a peek in the DIY archives on transmission flushing or search this forum and there are some good writeups.

I didnt want you to ignore this and run out of trans fluid.I dont know the interval between flushes, but I would follow that.

That is the engine oil cooler, The engine is on RH side and trans cooler is on the LH side with hoses that are identical.
The o ring on the hose may be all that is leaking. The hose in picture looks dry. The spring steel cuff clip that holds line into rad fitting is fitted with a hose clamp. I'm not sure why other than someone didn't trust the cluff or when the clamp is removed the cuff may be broken.
I have only found that o ring at dealer. It is a smaller gauge/cross-section than I have been able to find anywhere else.

1st picture is the oil cooler side of the radiator. <1/2 quart of oil resides in there; stick a pan under it and buy a new clip/O-ring for the line.

Most often, it's the hoses themselves that start leaking at the crimps in the hoses. They're like $100 each per hose and a huge pain to replace.

2nd picture is your coolant drain on the back of the engine block. I use it when I do a complete coolant flush.

It stays in the torque converter. Another 2 drain-and-fills will change out essentially all of the fluid.

Thank you for all the responses and knowledge guys!

I hope its just loose, Ive had enough pain in the butt projects for now after just doing the pcv job. Not to mention that I really dont want to spend $100 on a hose! haha

Some other much-cheaper options with much less investment in tools: (1) take the hoses to any hydraulic hose rebuilder, you should have several around if you are in truck and farm country, or (2) contact this guy http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/11 ... ler-lines/.
