Some people haven't been getting decent range with them. Could be battery issues with the remotes or quality variances from unit to unit. 25ft is plenty for a simple keyless device. I had to go without locking my car a few times this winter when my locks were iced up, so i'm happy just to be able to lock it.

It's the antenna, I'd say. Not sure the frequency these things work on, but the positioning of that wire may make a difference.
Was a range suggested by the maker?
Yes, the remote is a great solution for icy locks (trying to pee on them may cause other things to freeze). :D

Can you just buy a remote and a keyless entry module and plug the wire behind the glove box into it? Will it automatically work?

That is precisely what I did with my son's car. No other modifications were required.

He has the "Plain Jane" base model with no options, no alarm, no nothing so we have dressed it up with Cetus wheels to replace the steel wheels and hubcaps and I added the remote locking module. The only thing that was missing for the receiver module was the mounting bracket that goes by the A pillar. Some Velcro tape has worked just fine for the mounting.

Thanks for the reply Lee.

So I took out the glove box and plugged in the module. After I finally got the remote from ebay, I tried programing it by turning the ignition 5 times (w/o starting the engine), the pressing either lock or unlock, then turning the ignition off. NOTHIN.

Am I missing other parts? Do i need that little LED light diode thing on top of the dash? I assumed all I needed was the module and the remote!

My son's car doesn't have the alarm LED on the dash either and it has worked just fine with the stock relays.

Assuming that your remote matches the receiver and the battery in the remote is good it should work for you. There are two, nearly identical looking, remotes and receivers and the series must match for them to talk to each other.

It seems like it always takes a couple of tries before the remote mates up and I need to hold the lock or unlock button for over a second after the 5th Key On for things to finally activate. The cadence of the Position I to Position III cycle is of some importance and if you cycle it too fast or too slowly it gets confused.

If you can read the part number and FCC identifier numbers off the back of the remote and on the receiver we can tell you if it is a match.

OOPS! The battery was dead in the remote. Worked like a charm. Thanks!

Hey Lee,
I realize this is an old thread but I am trying to track down information about installing keyless on my 98 xc, I haven't had any luck finding any oem systems on ebay. I know I can buy an ebay fob and have a dealer program my car computer, but I refuse to pay my dealer any money if I can avoid it (mostly bad experience there) and will go with aftermarket rather than pay them 120 just to program the computer (oh, and they will only do it if I purchase a new fob through them anyways!) What's your recommendation?

Find another shop with a Volvo programmer.
With a '98, you can add a used remote, and
it shouldn't take long to program it to the car.
