S40 Engine Mechanical Questions

Post by georgel »

I'm working on a 2001 S40 for a charity program and have some technical questions for which I am finding contradictory information elsewhere on the web.

The engine is stamped B4204T. The VIN on the other hand says this engine is a B4204T3. How do I tell which it is? Some of the parts I need to order depend on the engine generation. This is the original engine according to VIDA.

I need to replace rod and main bearings as well as piston rings. Has anyone had any luck with "standard" aftermarket bearings? (vs the color coded Volvo main bearing set)

Do you know what the oil clearance of the rod and main bearings is supposed to be? I can find no engine rebuild specs in VIDA.

The VVT cam phaser (gear) is completely sludged up. Can this be cleaned?

Does anyone have a reasonably priced source, in the US, for:
Volvo piston rings?
Turbo re-build components? Including oil and coolant lines.

Thanks in advance for your help,

George
