My new XC90... 3rd(active) Volvo in the family fleet

Post by warcraftjunkie »

Well, after looking for a couple months I finally pulled the trigger on an XC90 for my wife. Got a 2008 with the 3.2 engine with just a little over 60,000 miles. It has a factory pre-owned warranty for 125,000 or 8 years from original date of service.... so that should cover me nicely for any surprises. I personally wanted the 4.4 8 cylinder model, but there just aren't a lot of them around that are newer than 2006... with "lowish" miles.

After picking it up and popping the hood to locate all the dipsticks and fluid containers I was struck that there was no transmission dipstick that I could easily locate. Is it hidden under the air filter box? I looked at the owners manual and it basically just says that unless you drive in extreme mountainous conditions for prolonged periods of time or pull trailers, there's no service needed for the life of the vehicle on the transmission fluid. I personally find that hard to believe.

Anyway, glad to add another Swedish tank to my fleet.

Your XC90 looks great! From what I've read, the consensus is that the transmission fluid should be changed every 50,000 miles, or so. If I were you, I would change the fluid now. When I bought my 2006 2.5T XC90 3 years ago, it had 42,000 miles, and I had the tranny flushed. Haven't regretted it--it's been a great car all around. Your transmission is a 6 speed Aisin-Warner (Toyota), and similar transmissions on Toyotas do call for a regular transmission fluid change. I don't know why Volvo says it doesn't need a fluid change??? Hope you enjoy your XC90!
