Just went out to the car to check if I had one and the PO had a sticker for the filter change but no date... Probably from years ago from the amount of crap in it.
When is the flap under it open? Is that the mix flap on the dash?
Installing 850 Cabin Air Filter

Installing 850, S70, V70, XC70 Cabin Air Filter
Little followup here... I bought a Purolator brand cabin filter and it did not fit very well. It was made out of very stiff cardboard that wasn't cut very precisely and was causing the edges to bow in. I had to trim some of the excess material at the corner joints and that helped a bit. I also took some folded cardboard from the box and reinforce the pleats either side (do on the side opposite the air flow) and that seems to be ok.

This thread was so useful when I replaced the cabin air filter for my 1998 Volvo V70 XC.
Here are the pictures.

Same experience at my end. I picked up the Purolator because I wanted to change my old one that afternoon. Purolator cabin air filters definitely do not fit the 1998 V70 series. Volvo OEM definitely fits, so it is the most likely choice after next year's pollen season. Don't know about the fit of Fram's offering.thecheat wrote:Little followup here... Here's the filter from my dads 98 v70 with 132k miles. Pretty sure it was original. It was so clogged the blower would squeal at higher speeds and the defrost was quite ineffective.

that is terrible. Good thing you checked it.
The cabin air filter is the most obscure item in the list of Volvo service items. I'd bet more 850 owners lubricate the antenna mast as per the owner's manual then check/change cabin air filter.
Heck, I'd bet more P80 owners change the transmission fluid -- which is decidedly not a consumable/replaceable according to the Volvo service documentation back then.

Great info, thank you. This is probably why it sounds like there's a few leafs stuck in my blower motor, looks like I can get the vacuum extension in there through the rain diverter to suck them out before installing a filter. Anyone try the OEM filter from the dealer? Is it effective at removing pollen? Allergies are kicking my behind this year

thank god the previous owners of my 850 GLT were maintenance freaks... I just replaced the cabin air filter. It was clogged with a lot of debris, but intact. Hopefully this will cure the problem of the A/C shutting off after 30 minutes or so.
