Cleaning sticky residue off '98 S70 window & radio contols

Brake parts has acetone/ketone which is a known desolver of plastics. So is Mineral Turpentine.

To remove this gunk only one product I can source works. It's called Shellite. It's sold at local hardware and is 100% Liquid Hydrocarbon. Is this available in the USA?

i would try pledge and microfiber cloth.
take a look at what this did to my switches, took a bit of rubbing but all came out (drivers one was scratched as you can see in after pic)
same idea with radio buttons and all other switches on the car, but i only took pics of this for some reason

just spray it on the cloth, then wipe the switches.
dont spray directly on them.

i have 3 higher end sportbikes, and this is the only product i use to wax/wash them. it cleans great, protects, and doesnt leave sticky residue, and gets rid of fingerprints and all sorts of other things.
its my go-to product for cleaning almost anything.
try it under the hood too, cleans plastics amazingly, and leaves them natural-clean, not like sticky-i-just-cleaned-it clean

I dont think we have this one available here in NZ. Must look around for it.
Looks just what i need for my ECC knobs which are very sticky looking and similar to your window switch pic' taken prior to cleaning.
I believe its the auto vinyl restoring sprays that are attacking the plastic personally.
never seen this happen as badly in any car prior to my Volvo.

I have was told and used the Magic Eraser with great success on the sticky buttons.

I used Goof-off, it worked great too. Didn't take away the black underneath but dissolved the crud nicely.

edit: worked perfecty for the sticky climate control knobs and the power mirror knobs, took off the sticky rubber coating and left shiny black like brand new. But I wouldn't use it on the window knobs unless you're very careful, the black will come off as they're apparently made differently.

Just used the pledge. Worked great. Took me about 20 minutes to clean the surfaces of all 3 switch assemblies. Service tech at Putnam Volvo in Northern California said it was too difficult and that I should buy the Driver, Passenger, and Mirror control units for $200, $50, $50 respectively.

Thanks for saving me $300 in parts and I am sure another $150 in labor.

I did all mine with isopropyl alcohol and they came out perfect with no elbow grease necessary. I bought an SC-901 radio that was really haggard and it looks factory new now. Doesn't harm the grey paint underneath. Put it on a q-tip to get in all the nooks and crannies.
