Heya. Got a little transmission issue I'm sorting out. Some direction would be amazing.
I spent a hot day driving through the desert. Maybe that's irrelevant. But after about 5 hours, I got an engine light and a message that says TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED.
The car made it home, stuck in what felt like 4th gear. Accelerating from a dead spot was slow going, but once I was up around 60MPH all was OK.
I checked the codes, came back P0717 and P0700. The P0717 pointed towards a crankshaft sensor, so I replaced that, cleared the codes, and everything worked fine for a few miles. Then back to square one: engine light, transmission message, same codes.
It's gotta be a computer issue, right? The car doesn't seem to know what gear to be in, which is also evident on the instrument panel... instead of a P (park), R (reverse), or D (drive) showing up in the digital indicator, I get a couple dash marks.
I've googled the bacon outta this issue but I'm not coming up with any straightforward answers. Anybody have any ideas, other than taking it to the dealer and getting the software updated (I just don't know why I would need an update, nothing's changed on the car).
Thanks in advance for any help whatsoever-
Eek! Transmission Service (engine codes P0717 and P0700) Hel

This code P0717 refers to the input signal sensor located on the transmission. Signal missing or intermittent. See part #9 on the diagram. There is two. Output and input. They have the same part number. As far as I can tell the input is located near the B4 servo cover #47. If it is the part you replaced you may want to look now for a wiring/terminal problem.

When you say you changed the "crankshaft sensor" it is not the engine sensor that you are referring to ?
See #11 in the following diagram. If it is the case you know what to do.

Hopes it help!

The input sensor is located near the park-neutral switch. The output sensor is farther to the rear of the transmission. Both are easily replaceable. To verify that it is the sensor and not wiring, you could try swapping them. When my input sensor went bad, the transmission would go into limp mode (as you describe... stuck in fourth gear... dashes on indicator) shortly after the car was driven. Upon swapping the sensors, it still showed the "service transmission" message, but didn't go into limp mode.

I found this on the Web. Even with the diagram it is not easy to read.
May be it can help.

The document in the attached link shows it better. Diagram P, unit 709. It confirms that the Input sensor is the one located close to the Park Neutral switch. The Output sensor is 708.

Hey Matt! I did exactly as you said, swapped the two sensors, one for the other, and the transmission service lights stayed on, but I was out of limp mode. My question is, how do I know which sensor needs to be replaced? I got a new error code p0503 which refers to the A sensor, correct? Formerly I had a p2106 which is the B sensor, but when I swapped them, the codes changed. So, question is, which is the A and which is B sensor? The one closest to the bumper or the windshield?
Thanks so much! This is an amazing help-

On my car, when the bad sensor was acting as the input sensor (the one toward the front of the car) the transmission went into limp mode. When the bad sensor was the output sensor (toward the rear of the car) there was no limp mode. I would suggest that it is the input sensor in your case. Since the two sensors are the same part, you really can't order the wrong one.

I realize this is an old thread but I'm having the same exact issues on my 01 V70XC, Transmission Service required warning and CEL with P0717. To confirm the input sensor being the problem I tried swapping the input and output ones but, unlike the pictures above, both of my sensors have a harness attached and join as a single connector into the main harness in front of the airbox. None of the microfiches I've looked at show them like this, is there a trick to separating the harness from the connector? There is no external lock at the sensor end and at the main connector end, where the two harness combine into one, only an internal lock to pull out the pins individually.
Any help appreciated.
