Drivewise - a device from our auto insurance ...

Post by xHeart »

...that plugs into ODB-II port in our cars.

Would MVS members help explore it?
Would it monkey with ECU and other controls?
It would take $100 off each year!!!
Can't go 11-miles higher than the speed limit, it will call cop on you, would it?
What would be more invasive after MVS and now NSA?

I have the Progressive Snapshot on my car. It's saved me $40/month thus far, so I'm not complaining.

It has no GPS device and has no idea what the speed limits are in your area. It keeps track of your miles traveled, number of "hard brakes" (decel of more than 7 MPH/sec), and then what time of day you're driving (12-4 AM is considered "high risk", rush hours are "medium", everything else is low risk).

It sends the data over a cellular network when the car is switched off, so if you think you did something wrong you don't want them to see, reach down and unplug it before switching the car off. I do it all the time if I get pissed off at someone or get stuck in heavy traffic.
I tend not to go over 80 MPH in the first place. Eats too much gas.

This would be an annoying thing to plug in on the x70 models, but it would be easy to keep in on the 850s.

(Columns are date, # of trips, driving time, # of trips, # of "hard brakes").

If anything, it's helped to calm my aggressive driving a bit and I would recommend it if your insurance rates are too high. Mine are through the roof in the Washington DC area.

And people wonder why I keep spending money on my '94 with the LH3.2 ECU system.

At the moment it is an option but sooner than you think it won't be. At least with the the OBD-I system it will make it tougher on them but they will do the same thing with GPS.

I have more issues with an OBD-II and cell connected device than I have with the NSA stuff. I do illegal things in my car regularly (over the posted speed) but I don't break other laws nor do I talk, e-mail, or text about anything illegal. If conversing about broken cars is a dastardly deed that ruffles the powers that be then I may have a hovering quiet rotor helicopter dropping operatives on my roof any minute.

I downloaded a copy of user acceptance agreement for our two cars...take a look.
It could save at much as $300 per year. I do not know anyone who has.

Can't be very convenient on older Volvos where it plugs into the OBD port.
You would need to have the console lid open which would then probably get broken within a week and no place to rest your arm.
I suppose on a P2 Volvo or most other cars where it's located under the dash it would not be in the way.

My two cars are plugged.
It is tucked away on 2001 V70XC, but on 1997 850 i took off the coin tray for it to plug-in.
I am a B- driver at 4%, too many hard brakes in urban driving.
My wife is insurance favorite with A+ scoring 18% saving.
