The "Brown " pigtail is a Fusible link spliced to the + bat lead to the cooling fan

Thank you for the clarification re BROWN wire.
At least the Brown wire is not there in my 1998 S70. Maybe it is supposed to be there for the earlier 850 series.

The picture provided by the OP in this thread shows the fan wire. It is the dark brown looking wire running next to the large gauge red cable into the conduit.
The alternator wire is on the inboard post in error and looks brown but is likely a red wire that is soiled or it might be a brown wire.
Car manufacturers publish wiring diagrams and mostly abide by them but not always on wires that run short distances. Also true with service parts for things like fusible links.

Some clarification for future readers.
1. The "Brown" wire was not Brown, it was RED!
The Aux Fan circuit runs on smaller wire than the big cables (that are attached to the starter solenoid lug).
See below:
2. Below is the photo from my 1998 S70 GLT. I labeled everything for future readers.
If you compare this photo against the first photo posted by the O.P., the RED Cable (from the alternator) was attached incorrectly by the O.P.'s mechanic to the inboard lug, this explains the symptoms that the O.P. had, which were:
- when car is off, everything is fine.
- when the engine runs, current from the alternator feeds to inboard lug, and the starter motor runs non-stop until you shut off the engine.
So mystery solved...
PS: This goes to say that before you disconnect anything, make a diagram. In other words, fixing cars is all about OBSERVATION before fixing stuff.
