2003 V70 2.4T - 175k
Just did the primary drain/fill because I'm starting to get a "windout" between 3-4 gears when under hard acceleration on freeway and have a load in car.
That stuff was FUNKY, smelled acrid and nasty, had nothing to do with the color red, and actually seemed kinda "thin" if I can use that word and have it makes sense.
I'm gonna drive it around a coupla more days and do it again, but I'm guessing the countdown has started on an other wise really great car in great shape....
I will say it did seem to shift smoother and I couldn't get it to windout between gears like before, but with fluid that nasty things can't be good in there....
The Hopkins measurer/filler gadget from previous post is PERFECT for this car, nozzle fits great, has a valve to start and stop flow, good length, very good piece to have for this.
So now I'm thinking I've probably got 10-20k left on this tranny, which then begs the question of whether to replace, or move on....opinions/info?
Dealer (galpin - horrific as far as I can tell) says roughly 6k for them to do it, that's a "Hell No", so what are my alternatives if it goes that way?
I'm all ears, finances are bad right now, it's not a good time to have this happen....

There is a suggestion to add seafoam-transtune with 1 of 3 drain & fill, then drive for few days.
I drove a week, close to 300mi between each drain and fill.

For future reference folks & to save everyone some $, I've done this procedure numerous times with Valvoline Maxlife Dexron/Mercron ATF. It's states on the bottle & website it meets Toyota ATF Specs, which meets Volvo specs. It's better for high mileage trannys, & is easily available at most local parts stores. No special trips or looking for a Toyota dealer needed. I have done this according to Volvo's schedule with good results.

my s60 has 175 on trans and is shifting pretty hard.
I am getting ready to do the drain and flush. I have read a ton of articles online. The concensus seems to be 3 drain and fills and the fluid should be volvo, mobil or the toyota trans fluid.
All the fluids seem to be the same. made by mobil ,made for our transmission.

How he got 4+ qts out of his tranny is beyond me...
my 2001 V70T5 and 2003 XC70 both get 3.1 to 3.2 qts out...no more...no less. The last time I tried it with a mighty pump (easier and less mess) and got about 2.8 qts out...so one could argue to do one more change. The only reason I'm posting is I read guys arguing on another forum that the mighty might type pumps don't get enough fluid out...but it's about 80% there.
So I do two changes if I use the drain plug and three changes with the pump...I used to do them on separate days (I drive 100+ miles each day) but now do them all in the same night with a short drive and run through the gears between changes. I notice no change in color on 3rd change when doing it with a few hundred miles between changes. I do it in one night when I'm in the mood and on a roll!
as of August 2013 our Toyota dealership still sells a case of TIV for $75.00

I read all the posts and have done two drain & fills on my 2005 V70. My question relates to the accuracy of the dipstick reading. On the first drain,I drained about 4 qts of ATF, and put 4 in, and the dipstick indicated it was grossly overfilled. The second drain, I got out about 4 qts, put in only 2.5 qts, and dipstick still reads too much fluid. I checked my wife's 2005 S60, both hot and cold, and her dipstick reads way overfilled also (fluid up to the "T" of "ATF" on the stick). I don't know whether to replace the amount I drain, and ignore the "Do Not Overfill" notice on the dipstick, or go with the dipstick. What happens if you run an automatic transmission with 1-1.5 qts less fluid?

Are you checking fluid levels with the engine still running, if not it will over read as the oil contained in the torque converter runs out back in to the sump when the engine is off giving a false high reading - Mike
