The Delta tool broke while in use by an MVS user

Post by matthew1 »

He and I are speaking civilly over email about what to do.

I suggested he buy a new one, finish the job on his 850, and return that tool as if the original had never broken. He is resisting this plan, politely.

What are your thoughts?

Can it break if being used correctly?

Does the tool have any kind of guarantee?

Then again regardless, if he rented from a chain auto parts store and it was returned broken or missing parts he would own it.

That's a bummer and a bad situation for everybody.

Hope things work out.

Me I would replace it. Just as if a borrowed a friends lawn mower, chainsaw, ect.

It is a bit after the fact, Matt, but it really makes sense for borrowers to kick 10 USD (making that number up) per rental in Board Donation. That covers this contingency of course, in the long run.

^ Yes, good idea. I'll raise the deposit.

I've got the user's $140 deposit, so if I don't hear back from him in a few days, I'll use that to buy another tool and continue the service.

That would be a shame, because then he'd be out the use of a tool to finish his job, given the scenario I proposed to him (mentioned in my OP in this topic).

As to the tool's durability, I can't speak to it. I hadn't used it. Looked and felt solid whenever I shipped it.

It was on its 7th "tour" I believe. Brand new months ago.

Just got an email reply from the user. He wants me to eat the $140 and (he) pay the $10 community replacement fee retroactively.

Equipment hire businesses normally have 2 rates for hire don't they?
The higher fee includes a built in insurance protection levy to cover reasonable unintentional /wear and tear type damage.
The lower fee requires the hirer to front up for the full replacement cost of the tool.

Could this be welded/repaired by someone with experience? Doesn't look like an awfully complex device.
Perhaps send the guy half the repair bill if it's under $60

Dons Arbitrator hat......

10 to MVS for everyone who uses it, no refunds.
50 USD for comprehensive insurance, must return pieces, loss not covered.
150 PayPal required before ship covers loss

In the case of the current customer, collect 50 USD, refund 40USD if tool is repairable per JdS

On edit...see Mikes post above - great minds think alike!! :D
