Hi everybody,
I am planning to buy XC90 years between 2003-2006. When I check ads I see lots T6 with replaced transmission ( mostly by dealers).
As I read from forums, early T6's have expensive transmission problems. However I am wondering, even if the transmission replaced by a dealer, do they still have the same problem(s)? Should I still stay away from T6's?
In other words, are there any T6's worth to buy?
Thanks
Used T6 with replaced transmission

Have 2004 T6 with 125,000 miles.
Never had problem with motor or transmission

I have a 03 S80 T6 and the stories I could tell you brother!!!! Check the tranny model. If its a GM 4T65E and it has never been rebuilt, run like Mr bolt from Jamaica until you no longer see the car in the rear. However if it has been rebuilt and its reasonably priced, I would chance it. I rebuilt my tranny last year (with lots of help from triple edge performance) and the upgrades available for that model remedies the original designs flaws.

I didn't know that T6 of those years came with different transmissions other than GM trans. My next question would be is there an easy way to understand the transmission model, especially, if it 's changed.
Thanks
Thanks

Also, the T6 is not the problem (as in the S80) its the tranny in the XC90 with the T6. Just not worth the risk, and if it's power that you think you'll need test drive the 2.5, if you think it's too weak, test out a T5 v70, then get the XC90 and and IPD ECU flash and you'll have similar HP and Torque for about $750 and no transmission worries...

Not so fast..... You'll also be lugging 1,000lb more with the XC90. When I worked it out, based on peak power the XC90 needs to be making 315HP to be close to a '98 T5 V70 making 240.stone36 wrote:have similar HP and Torque for about $750 and no transmission worries...
On the T6 bottom line is that the transmission cant take the torque that the T6 motor puts down. It's bad in an S80, even worse with an XC90 because naturally due to the extra weight you are likely to be using more of that torque on a regular basis.
We have a 2.5T. It's OK. All of the power is down low, It punches good off the line and responds well up to half throttle, beyond that its not making enough boost to make a huge difference.
An electromagnetically controlled supercharger would probably give the uumph at the mid to top end of the RPM range. Something that cuts in at say 3500RPM, but that would be $$$$$ as you would need injectors and other supporting hardware too of course. Would be cool though...
