The Delta tool broke while in use by an MVS user

I would love more pictures but it looks like it bound up in the clamp unit and torque sheared the bolt off.
I will happily see what I can do. No charge - just ship it to me.

All hire companies have a policy of inspection and service of the tools after each use (some are more dedicated to this ethic than others)

If there were written instructions on its use as well as guidelines for cleaning & lubrication at the end of each use this may have been avoided. (or the tool may have just been pushed outside of its intended use limits)

It would be great if a laminated sheet with suggested cleaning procedure & lube points with a moly grease shown clearly on a photo of the tool was sent with the tool as it tours around the country.

This way the onus is on each user to take care of the tool and if this doesn't take place an appropriate amount of bond is deducted by Matthew.

MVS is a community. It takes care of each other voluntarily.

It is fair to says that it would have broke or lost at some point. It is a known natural course.

So what is the lesson?

The lending rule where borrower would receive a portion back, not all of their deposit, the small portion withheld as a fee would contribute toward the tool's repair and/or replacement.

Would Pareto Principle, 80/20 rule help us with this situation?

I would say the sum of fee collected from the 5 borrowers should pay for the tool replacement. Any excess should be left to the discretion of our program manager.

Therefore, I ask, are there funds in the program to replace it?

Unless we find a defect in the tool I would agree with- you break it you bought it.

Personal responsibility is important in these matters. The deposit of $140 was taken in case you don't return the working tool back to Matt. If it is broken you forfeit your deposit. If its a defect in the tool then its a different matter. I called my Volvo dealer and they have replaced hundreds of Delta link bushings with their tool (same one) and are still using it. This tool either had a defect or was misused.

Lets never even think about sticking the bill to MVS. If it breaks after its paid for Matt might want to just get another and not keep the users deposit. Rewarding MVS's goodwill with a bill for a broken tool is not appropriate unless a defect is found.

That being said- I will still fix it if I can.

JDS dealer data tells us the tool breaks from defect in material or defect in operation. Frankly, it is hard for me to see how one could misuse it!

Its easy to misuse a tool like this. If it gets stuck and you put a long enough bar (or enough torque)while bound up and turn outside the natural axis ,it will shear off at the weakest point. The strength is in the threads smoothly pulling the insert. Enough force, applied at an angle to the natural rotation of the bolt shaft will make it fail quickly. Even not lubricating the tool properly will allow it to bind and break.

Also sometimes tools are used above their rating (not removing holding bolts and continuing to tighten ) for the right application or for a completely different application that the tool was not specified for.

These are rookie mistakes. A good mechanic knows how to take care of, lubricate, and properly align and use tools. We have all broken a few by misuse in our time. Myself included.

If I don't hammer out a compromise with the user soon, I'll use his deposit to buy a new one and re-start this program. We've been communicating daily via email.

Isn't it best to determine if the tool is repairable before working out financials or is that thing truly heading to heaven?
