V70R coolant headache.

Post by Jockjunior »

Right,

I have spent hundreds on my beloved car, all was going great until I popped a hose, the upper heater hose, I also changed the rad pipe under this, the expansion tank as it was warping through age, cap and thermostat.

But it keeps sitting at half temp for a while then rises up to the high red and overflows out the new expansion tank, I have no other leaks, no oil in water or water in oil, no white smoke from the back, it had a new water pump when timing belt done 5k ago.

Before pipe popped it would sit at half happily all day, fan kicks in, heater is hot? What is it?

Someone help, I'm tearing my hair out?

How far did you drive with the pipe off and no coolent is there any bubbles in the coolent as I would get sniff test done.

Or you have a large air pocket park car noise down on a incline and keep car ticking over and se if it can clear the airlock

Head gasket leaks don't always result in white smoke out of tailpipe. Often the pressure is cylinder leaks by when cylinder(s) fire and the pressure spikes.
This can be verified with coolant test strips or a coolant test kit. The strips can be purchased at good auto parts sellers. The kit is costly so it is something a garage can do for you. If combustion gases are present from gasket breach, these two methods test for it.

Autozone is now renting the compression gas tester kit if you buy some fluid

I'm thinking Perthshire is in Scotland. I don't know what the auto parts landscape is like there.

Wow quick replies, I'm hoping its not head gasket as its replacement, engine auto box and turbo, I will try and test for gases but if it isn't what else could it be, water seems to be flowing, it had rad weld months ago as a pin prick in rad with no issues but its just had fresh coolant?

did you remove the thermostat as it might be sticking now due to rad weld and that could be the issue try replacing the stat.

You need to establish the system is holding pressure as the coolant system needs the pressure to prevent the coolant from boiling, if it does boil it will blow out from the expansion tank as your describe.
Coolant boils at 100 Deg C your rad fan will only run at slow speed with a coolant temp of 106 Deg C and should switch to high speed if/ when the temp reaches 114 Deg C without pressure in the coolant system the coolant will boil prior to the fan kicking in.
You mention using Rad Weld to stem a previous leak, I would be checking to see if it is still leaking as a leak will let the pressure out followed very quickly with boiling coolant - Mike

What year is the car in question here?

I need to assign this to the proper forum but without knowing what model year it is I don't know where to put it.
