Power Antenna Removal and Repair

Since last winter I've been going without a power antenna, which often gave me little or no reception.
I finally decided to tackle it

I've created a photo collage as best as I could, I check back often so if you have any questions feel free to ask.
I Couldn't hear the motor even trying to run, but i figured i would give it a shot

First off

: Take out the plastic stops, turn them 1/4 turn either way. There are 3.

The nut for the top of the antenna that sits on the fender is 16mm, not 17mm, although the 17mm probably still works. Nice writeup! I've done about 3 of these, the first time was a learning experience and took FOREVER

Yeah, it took awhile, I tried to be as clear as possible and 15megapixel photos take forever to upload. i took more, just didnt post them

Thanks for this write-up! I had the whole thing removed from the trunk before I found this post. It helped a lot.

You asked for suggestions, so here goes. I hope these don't sound too critical. Basically, when you do one of these, you are trying to communicate your thoughts to another. Spelling and punctuation go a long way. Try using a text program to create your text and check for spelling and grammar before pasting to Photoshop. (I just misspelled "grammar," but fortunately, this post has a spellchecker). Also, use a bolder, brighter font when composing the frames.

It is awesome that you are even willing to take your time to do this post—a completely generous act—keep up the good work. Thousands of Volvo owners are in your debt!

Your instructions for removal are great. But, now I need to reassemble it and I can't figure out just where to place the gear strip. Could you show or tell me just how to replace the gear strip>

extend the antenna mast all the way and then wind the gear with the strip on it by hand. Shouldn't be too hard.

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe more detail of my problem will help. The antenna will rise one section. The second and third sections will not come up. I cannot even pull the sections up so maybe they are held/stuck by the plastic gear strip? I cannot get the mast piece off to clean or inspect. Any ideas on how to get the first major section of the mast loose? I'm guessing the plastic gear strip is either broken off in the mast, or there is something jamming the second and third sections from rising. I would appreciate any thoughts you may have on this.

I have taken the thing completely apart, but I cannot get the mast loose to clean/inspect it. Thanks for any info you can provide.

I'm not exactly sure on that. Its been a couple years, but as i remember the mast does have some of the gear strip inside so it could jam and break off even more sections...
Like I said. I'm not quite sure.
