1993 960 B6304S vs F

Post by tomatoes4all »

Hello all,
I am currently parting out a 1993 960 as a donor to my 1993 965. The parts car has a B6304S engine, but has a 23 mm timing belt. I was under the impression that the S engine was only available from 1995 onwards and always had the 28 mm timing belt. I know the parts car has a changed engine (most bolts have copper coat on them! Bless that mechanic!), but a '93 with a S engine and 23 mm belt seems very random. Can anyone shine a light on this for me, please? Engine number is B6304S163999

I would like to one day use this engine as a replacement for my current one.

Thanks, Erik

Erik if it's a 23mm belt it was rightfully from a '94 model. This was a one year model run with the 24mm belt and they had 148 teeth if memory serves me right. At least it will have the same size belt as what you currently have (though yours is a trickily modified one by yours truly)

Always wanted to investigate the differences between the blocks with regard to the 28mm system. I know that the cam and crank pulleys are DEFINITELY a different part number. In addition to this the hydraulic tensioner, idler pulley, water pump & tensioner arm were different part numbers. As far as fitting the larger timing system to an ealier block there's not much info out there so I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

I still have a Gates 28mm belt if you need it.

Hi Mike, thanks for the offer of the belt, I'll may take you up on it if it would fit. First I'll need to remove the gear box and replace "our" Toyota box (which has held up really well, just going into 4th is getting harsh now, but all others are still smooth) with the donor box. Engine will come out as soon as I get back from my next trip and the rest of the car will go for scrap. I've got many tins of fasteners, perfect door cards, door seals, spare head light units, fuel pump, ABS unit, perfect radiator, I replaced the interior carpets and seats, etc. Dealer maintained from 1993, the PO must have spend mega $$ and then it got written off due to a few large dents. However, I'm very happy with it as a parts car for "our" 965.
Anyway, I think the S series B6304 is the 1994 to end of 960 run with the milder cams for more torque down low, but all else is the same. I'll post a question on the Dutch forum and glean some information from there. Most of their 960's were 2.5 liter 24 valve engines, some with M90 gear box. Cheers, Erik.

Sounds like one of the solenoids is sticking then releasing quickly in a non-linear way.

Swapping the relevant solenoid over from your donor gearbox would be a relatively easy task, but of course if the engine is going to be sourced from your donor it may be easier to drop the whole assembly in.

That's the best way to source parts for a 960 in Oz. An entire parts car can't be beaten.

When you look up the engine choices on Vida for a '95 (or '93) 960 the choices are: B6304FS or B6304GS only. The milder cams began in '95. Why this occurred with newer front suspension geometry and IRS on all wagons I just don't know.
