04 V70 2.5T Fueling issue
04 V70 2.5T Fueling issue
Filled up to take my son back to college today and on the way back, needed to refuel. Had driven just over 400 miles and display said 60 miles to empty so was excited to see mpg. When I removed the gas cap, there was no excessive pressure or issues, so I started to fill as normal. Got .9 gals in when all of a sudden half of that came spewing out. Each time I tried to fill at normal rate, it would back up so I had to put 1/2 gal at a time very slowly until it was full---never had this issue and have owned the car over 3 yrs. Have 132K on it. Thinking a venting issue but no idea where to look. Thanks in advance, Jim

When you fuel that car the fuel vapors displaced go through the charcoal canister so the fuel vapors are captured and then through a leakage detection pump with an integral vent closing valve and then finally up through a hose to a vent outlet up on the metal filler pipe from fuel cap.
Just to be sure this is not a fluke I'd do nothing until I drove and attempted to fuel again.
If it does it again start engine and immediately shut it off and then try fueling again.
A little background: that leakage detection pump (LDP) will not be operated after engine shut down is fuel level is below 15% or above 85% or if the ECM knows the fuel door was opened (broken latch/missing door can bypass the LDP inhibit feature to allow fueling).
SO if your fuel door is missing due to broken hinge and you don't have to hit fuel door unlock button then you just caught it doing it's LDP thing and canister venting valve was energized and closed stopping vapor exit and thus fuel entry.

Hoping it was a fluke.....My fuel door is present and I do have to hit the unlock button in order to re-fuel. Yesterday I was down to 1/4 tank and after pulling into station, I sat for a few seconds before shutting down, pressed unlock button, turned off and began to fuel with no issues. Thanks for the input.
