2002 V70 Fairly bad oil leak

Post by rootkr »

I just recently bought a really cheap 2002 V70 non-turbo and am hunting down a pretty bad oil leak. I changed out the oil trap as I read that it can cause problems and didn't notice any problems there, as in it was not clogged up. The leak still remains: whilst the revs are over 3000 rpms or so in park, there is smoke from rear of the engine closest to the firewall. It smells like burning oil, and there is some noticeable spray on the ground at the rear of the engine bay. I am pretty experienced with mechanics having rebuilt a few engines, so nothing is too bad for me, I just need a step in the right direction on what might be the issue with this unfamiliar engine. Thanks!

The first step I feel like would be to pinpoint exactly where the leak is coming from. Once you have that, what to replace will be self-explanatory

Where the turbo oil return pipe would go back in to the block (if it were a turbo model) on the N/A engines this port is blocked off with a small cover disk, this will have popped out which, when it falls out causes oil to spray on to the exhaust above 3K RPM - Cheap fix is to get a new oil way core plug and tap it back in to the hole - Mike

In support of Mike's suggestion, this sealing plug is known to cause problem on N/A engine. It is definitely an area to look at. See the following thread for more information.

Just to let you know, that was the problem, and a 20mm core plug has fixed the problem :-) Thanks a bunch
