abs code still on

Post by mommymonster »

Hi

For the 3 years I have had my GLT, the ABS has been lit. everything has checked out normal and the car has passed inspection. this year as the code is still on i have been informed it means i need a new axle and i should junk the car, the mechanic seems unwilling to run the codes thru for less then $500. Note, there is no frame or major damage other then usual dings and scratches of being the family taxi.

Am I being scammed?

Absolutely. Find a different mechanic, stat.

You most likely need an ABS unit. Matty Moo is a member here and rebuilds them for under $100. His site: https://www.midwest-abs.com/

Point your new mechanic to this MVS Forums ABS DIY topic.

I usually give scans away for free as long as it only takes a few minutes, but that isn't too often... Maybe once a month. Sometimes I'll set a price which is whatever I want at that given moment. Maybe a can of coke or a 40 of swill.

It takes all of 2 minutes to do a scan using a handheld. 4 minutes using vol-fcr, of which all of that is waiting for my old netbook to start. 6 or so minutes using Vida.

I second getting a new mechanic. The ABS has to do with the braking system, not your axle.

A broken reluctance ring on the axle will mess up the ABS sensor pulses so there may be some correlation. If the ring is just loose and the axle is otherwise OK the ring can be glued back in place.

The "scan charge" is miles beyond obscene and even if there is a bad axle it not reason to junk the car.
