1999 S80 2.9L - Hydraulic Timing Belt Tensioner?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 S80 2.9L - Hydraulic Timing Belt Tensioner?

Post by puroak »

I've gone over instructions for doing the timing belt a thousand times, but have yet to find instructions on the hydraulic timing belt tensioner for my 1999 volvo s80 2.9L. It seems later in 1999 volvo replaced the hydraulic tensioner for the spring loaded one. Would anyone happen to have some instructions on this or maybe some advice? I'm not sure if the hydraulic actuator needs to be replaced as well.

This is what the tensioner looks like on my s80...

and this is what the hydraulic actuator looks like

I ended up ordering the wrong timing belt component kit and got the spring loaded tensioner...

That's what happens to most people when they shop at Rockauto, whether it's incorrect radiator listings or tensioners for your S80.

Better to stick to a specialist such as FCP, IPD or eEuroparts.

Your setup will be the same as 95-98 960/S90 including hydraulic tensioner. Procedure is identical in most respects to a P2 inline 5 including marks.

When you recompress the hydraulic tensioner with a G clamp check for leaks. Som e people change them every 2nd belt change to be safe.

FCPs listings should break up the engine numbers where the change took place.

Rockauto admitted that their catalog was wrong and sent me a return label :x. Thanks for the advice.
