1999 s80 timing off

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Your photo looks spot on

those were Mike's photos, i will attempt to load some up in a sec. i have seeen the VVT setting tutorial several times, in a few photos i have seen that the bolts are in the middle or toward the right and the open bolt guides (slots) are to the left. again perhaps the crank is off. where the 3/8 extension stops when i turn the crank anti clockwise, cyl 1&6 are approx halfway down and rising. 2&5 are almost at the bottom going down. 3&4 are at the top going down. are the pistons in the right spot? not sure how to add photos, i will try now.

the pictures are reversed in the order i wanted to show them. i think it is possible that the crank may be my problem. doesn't each rotation bring it back to the same spot? not the cams, they need 2 cranks to return to the same spot, right?

Take it from me crank is TWO turns to get to right spot with engine assembled.

With engine disassembled it can be one turn of crank.

Quite simply swap inlet cam for exhaust. That is the only problem here.

actually swap the two? but the cam speed sensor is on the inlet side? or do you mean the positions like turn them both 180 deg? i am confused. disassemble the cam sprocket and the vvt and swap them and swap the cams?

disregard that last question because i cannot put the vvt on what is now the exhaust cam and vise versa, then swap the cams. the cam speed sensor is always on the intake cam. that is the way the mounting slot is on the intake. plus the existing intake cam has the center bolt for the vvt and the exhaust does not.

Well perhaps somebody did EXACTLY that here before you got to it. The only way I see to get your lobe positions to all the photos we have collectively posted while having slots horizontal would be to do that in my opinion.

You must have your rear slots horizontal while having your lobes in the correct position. However you work it out something is wrong with your photo.

that is what is so frustrating. i have had it running before, as i have reworked the head when i bought it. (it was badly warped) i cannot get the configuration correct now. i cant swap the two because of the speed sensor and the vvt center bolt. aaaaagh! the speed sensor and the vvt are on the intake, or so i have read and have been told.

Vida doesn't have a belt replacement section, rather it's part of the whole cylinder head replacement procedure.

I've posted up the PDF below, but still references cams at horizontal.
Also I posted a photo from this very post below again referencing cams at horizontal and lobes as chrism and I posted

Also this is the post of the S80 top end rebuild: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 11&t=35482

I'VE WORKED IT OUT. OUR PHOTOS ARE OF THE CAM COVER TURNED UPSIDE DOWN.

YOUR PHOTO IS OF THE HEAD WITH CAMS INSERTED.

A COMMON MISTAKE WHEN LOOKING AT PHOTOS
