ok, thanks Mike. i didn't catch that either. so it looks like my marks are very close. but if cyl3&4 at at the top or very close, when i install the top cover it will open #3 intake and #6 exhaust. #6 piston is down so i am not worried, but wont #3 intake valve get bent? i think i may have bent one doing this before. am i doing something wrong?

Remove the hydraulic adjusters & check the free height of the valve stems with a ruler or straight edge.

If this isn't possible due to their depth check them using a piece of wire.

If they're not even you have a bent valve.

With cam cover off you can compress cylinder 4 and listen for leaks. Then compare it to the time it takes for other cylinders to vacate.

If you have a compression tester you should still be able to achieve reasonable compression perhaps about 140psi on all cylinders then check no 4 against this

i have been offof the s80 as i had to redo the head on a 1998 s70 5 cyl. so much easier to work on. i assembled the s80 head. all of the marks were good. it still wouldn't spin freely at the crank when i put the cover back on. i am doing something wrong. when i removed the cover the crank turned freely. i have put the lock on the cams (upper cover) now. so when i put the 3in extension into the port behind the starter abnd crank it counter-clockwise it stops at the mark correct?

Is cylinder 1 around 2.5 inches down from top of travel when timing is set?

that sound about right Mike. however it is a little more difficult to tell b/c the head is back on. i think 1&6 are about halfway down 2&5 are farther down and 3&4 are almost at the top or just past the top. i cant figure whatt is going one with rotation after i get the head cover on.

Bent valves wouud do it. Is there any way there is a bent one? Did you compare the free height of the stems with the cover off?

i took it back to the machine shop and they replace 4 bent valves, so they say. i did a light test onthe head when it came back. i lined up the slots on the cam locked them, rolled back the crank until it stopped on the mark with the extension in the port behind the starter. rolled the vvt forward (clockwise) tensed the belt from the crank, pully, intake, exhause, water pump, pully and replaced the hydrolic tensioner. it cranked about a quarter turn then put up some resistance. this is, of course after i pulled out the extension and took off the cam lock. any advice?
