2002 V70 ignition coil replacement

Post by Volvo Daddy »

Had to have a bad ignition coil (#3) replaced expensively in the 2002 V70 2.4L base engine. Since the remaining coils are original w/ 160K miles on them, I'm replacing the other 4 before one of them fails, leaving wife and/or kids on the side of the road. I've read E170_Driver's very helpful tutorial on the subject and have two questions.

1) Is use of dielectric grease on the coil boots recommended? When I replaced the coils on my 2001 Ford F150 4.6L V8, dielectric grease was recommended on the inside of the plug end of the coil boot and on the coil boot edge where it fits into the plug well in the cylinder head. But there's no mention of it in E170_Driver's tutorial.

2) After removing the plastic cover over the coils, I noticed some oil in the 'valleys' in the head beneath where the coils actually mount. It was most noticeable in the valley beneath the middle coil (#3 which is the one that failed), but there was also a little oil under coils 1, 2, and 4. I'm not sure if the presence of this oil reflects sloppy pouring of oil into the filler neck or a potentially more serious problem. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

have you serviced the PCV system yet? At those miles is overdue or you'll start blowing seals and heavy oil leaks will follow.
