Decided to keep the Platinum

Post by steve850 »

Hey gang. Haven't been around the board in a while, the XC70 is running great :-). I've just finished some fairly major work (full brakes, wheel bearings, tables, tie rods, abs sensors, tune up and rocker replacement) on a friend's Windstar and I'm back I'm "the groove" - sooooo, I've decided I'm going to keep the 96 850 Platinum "smoke generator" and fix her up.

I checked the timing belt today and found a tag hidden that says it was replace 125k km's ago ! That nearly 80 miles ! I guess I should consider myself lucky...The turbo is shot, so instead of rebuilding, I'm going to drop in a 16t (replacing the 15g). The straight flange 16t's are hard to come by, so I'm going with an angled flange. I'm getting my hands on a stock downpipe, and the cat is aftermarket, so I'm hoping I can get the whole thing apart and line it up without too much trouble. Anybody done one without spending the big bucks on a custom downpipe?

Anyway, more news as I get into it!

Cheers

The 16T is definitely more laggy than a 15T. The angled flange may help with that somewhat.

I've heard (read) that the 16t is a little better off the line than the 15g - better for city driving. In the long run (litteraly) it is a little slower - but I'm looking for the former. I've also read that you only have to worry about significant engine issues if you move up to the 18 or 19. Remaps are required, and the rods probably won't hold up to significant punishment with the 19t

The biggest reason for the 16t is that they are readily available in my area. 10 year of 15g turbos are all in the same sorry shape as mine :-)

Drive a 98 S70 and a 850 T5 back-to-back, and I think you'll find that the 850 has a lot more city power than the S70. The 99 has a different flange, as well as variable valve timing that may give it a bit better acceleration off-the-line.

The Mitsubishi turbos really don't tend to wear that much - the one my brother just took out of the S70 was still in like-new condition.

Yeah, putting a 16 onto a 15G engine - no ill effects there.

Well, parts are ordered for the Timimg Belt ki, so I figured I'd get into it, start dissassembly and see just how easy or hard the T5 is, and the verdict is pretty easy, even with my big meat-hook hands. Got stalled at the tensioner pulley- no combination of tools will let me get my Torx bit in there. Have to go shppping...

I also PBlasted the turbo to death and started in on the bolts; looks like its gonna be reasonable...and I picked up the used turbo and downpipe tonight. Turbo's in great shape, no play, and I got it with the angle-flange downpipe and flex for $100 !

Update - got fedup with the T45 on the tensionner pully, tried a bunch of stuff and driled a hole through the fender well. Good thing too, because that sucker was in there good!

All disassembled, waitig for Grotton. Got the turbo completely unbolted and loose, just have to get the oi line off the bottom.
Seafoing the ancient rings, and preparing myself to do the valvetrain of I havd to.

Alhought cramped for space, these are still great engines to work - and, of course, great engines period

The project continues. Was away for a couple of weeks but back at it

Head is off, major clean up done, valve seals changed, etc. (didn't lose any keepers :-) ). Valves and cams in great shape for a car with 330 000 kilometers...

"New" 16t turbo us in the car, with new modified angle-flange downpipe, took a break to make sure I've got the coolant lines going in the right places! Good thing there are good resources for sorting that out! Water pump is done, and the head is going back on next. Should post some pictures soon.

Cheers

Well, its' been a long project, with very little time to work on it lately, but I blitzed a little and got everything back on the car this week, fired her up and she runs !

Still have some idle issues, but the one thing I did not take apart and clean was the Idle control valve, so that will come off next.

Other than that, nice and smooth, turbo seems to be spooling up nicely.... Can't wait to get it out on the road for the first road test !!
