87 240 Hard Starting!

Post by Harry von Zell »

Hi All, just got a '87 240 Wagon for my teenage son. He hates it, so uncool! LOL!

Car has 173k miles, recently tuned-up all fluids perfect.

Now the problem....

Very hard cold starting. Cranks 7-10 times, Recrank another 7ish and it starts. Has new plugs, wires, cat etc.

Thanks for any help!!!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Check the cold start injector and the thermal time switch which controls it.

Hey Harry:

Your son will find out quickly how "way cool" that 240 wagon really is, once he learns how to fold down the rear seat and takes young ladies on dates. Just don't let him put curtains in the back windows.

BTW, my teeage daughter just loves our 740 sedan. And I was glad she was driving that TANK instead of my wife's minivan when ran into that mailbox standard on the side of the road late one night last spring. The only injury was her pride and it didn't phase the car one bit.

Now, if you encounter an intermittent, no hot-start with your car, let me know. Been there, done that, have the solution.

As always happens, the saga continues. Just flunked my emmissions inspection *.3 on the NOX scale (pass is about 3.5)

Backing up a bit, it appears the car may have has sat for a while. Old gas might have been part of the problem.

Put in some "Guaranteed to Pass" additive and filled the tank with premium 93.

Car starting BETTER!

Any other comments appreciated, and THANKS!

If it has been sitting for some time this could cause your emissions problem. Give it a good hard drive to blow out the cobwebs and soot.
