1995 850glt Can not remove left front axle!

Post by North42g »

I ve tried it all. Usually an axle shaft is a 30 minute job for me.
i have tried with a crowbar and some specialty tools. (not any volvo special tools ) All I succeeded in doing was pulling half the axle out. the cage and shaft are still inside trans. This is a night mare !
I've heard the left side can be tough but this is ridiculous!
So what else can I do?
Anyone know? I manage to re install the bearings into the inboard cage so i could drive it if needed, dont really trust it though.
I could use some ideas....Thanks.

One of the posters here rigged up a cable which wraps around the inner cv and is tied to a weight. This way you can get a really big swing and hopefully it will shift. Turning the CV will help to move the circlip to a new position with each new heave-ho.

I have at times just left the original inner in there and repacked it with new grease while using the new shaft and old knuckle join for the same reason.

I use a cold chisel as a wedge. I line it up, from the bottom, offset from the center so as to miss the actual axle shaft and then just tap it with a hammer until the shaft pops free. It has worked every time and it doesn't damage the old axle.

I've done the same as Ozark but have used a block of wood in the shape of a wedge. Also used a prybar. You have to pry against the trans case or it will come apart.

I will try those suggestions saturday after work and get back with, ...hopefully, a successful story.
Otherwise I may just leave old inboard cage in there and replace outboard side and shaft, repack with grease etc, etc...(I wish I thought of that the other night) afterall, it is only the outboard cage/bearings that is the failure. thank you very much.

Use a wedge - 1000x simpler than rigging up a cable and it works every time.

Upside to the choker cable is that there's no tearing up the trans case.
The cable wraps around the part that's being replaced. Just sayin'...

When I had this problem with mine I, I was removing the whole trans from the car, removed the pass side axle from the trans and used a drift through the pass side making sure not the hit the pinion shaft and tapped with a hammer and it popped right out. If you do it this way make sure you know what you have the drift on and that it isn't wedged against anything. I spent probably 30 mins trying with various chisels and prybars and tugging with no luck, the hammer and drift about 30 seconds.

I have pulled several of them in minutes using the carpenters pry bar in the thumbnail of this video. It works wonders. Slide the short end behind it and hit the flat end with your palm or a small sledge hammer.

Thank you for posting the video.
For angle torque, in a 5 bolt pattern, a turn from lug-to-lug is 72º. Do not go pass the lug ever.
