V70XC AWD 2001 Wiring harness melted
Hi All, I have just purchased a 2001 v70 xc awd 2.4t, i had a look under the plastic engine cover,the wiring comes up from the three large bundles by the gearbox, the cables running up to spark plugs have melted and cracked/broken, the worst section is between the two plugs nearest to the cambelt cover end, i managed to get the car to start by poking the wires with a stick as my partner cranked it over, He lp required as to a good fix, can i just splice the cables with crimps or would this up the system ? I had an 850 2.4 and it was a fantastic car so thought another volvo would be a wise choice ..... silly boy !!!! never again by the looks of all these posts, i do however like the fact volvo now have a 'live chat' system in place, p.s mines only got 85000 miles on the clock so im a bit annoyed, any suggestions would be great appreciated
long live my mitsi fto gpx in black for fun
))))

Satch
My new home computer won't hold my VIDA to check if your car has a separate coil harness that you can replace. You can splice in new wires and you can buy the ends from Volvo. This will be a solder and shrink wrap job. I use some heat rejection cloth around those wires. Its overkill but that's me.
I will check tomorrow at work if I get a spare minute. Cheapest option is to splice in. Just remember to protect the wires from heat and moisture as well as the overly common wrecked wire from the coil cover being bolted down and pinching the wires.

Looks like a cut, replace, solder , shrink wrap and heat protect job unless you have $950 to invest in the new harness from Volvo. Or go to a junk yard and pull one.

wow thanks for that info, i went out this morning at 745am and didnt come out from under the bonnet till noon, the whole loom has broken apart, conduit all brittle and falling apart, i tried splicing the worst of the bad wires but to no avail, i killed my battery and my heavy duty booster pack, im getting fuel and its cranking but it just wont fire at all, the plugs to the igniter coils are all shot with the clips all broken off, they have been tie wrapped on to the plug caps, the wires coming from them are broken and brittle, the wires to the injectors are also all brittle, even the main harness loom bundle running above gearbox is fallen apart, it just crumbles to nothing. So would my volvo main dealer be able to wire in that new loom section, or could the wires be bad and it be something else altogether? thanks for advice anyway
p.s. ramsgate is south east uk 1hr from london
sandy beaches are great

Go to a junk yard and get the engine harness in the diagram. You can plug it in yourself and save hundreds. I would think your local Volvo dealer would have a bill over $1000 when done if you take the car to them and have a new harness installed. The junk yard would probably charge you $150 for the entire harness. I would be off to a local yard or have one sent by mail from one of our sponsors above

Scrap yard but I would only cut out the section going to the top of the head then solder to the old harness between the gearbox and where the cables go under the top cover. Get some lengths of convolouted conduit to replace the black plastic tube as it will be shot even on the harness from the breakers yard, easy to find on e-bay.
A harness from any five cylinder Volvo petrol model 99 onwards should be the same (in the UK they introduced the one coil pack per plug from 99).
If you get a non Turbo harness the VVT plug connector will be on the other cam pully to your engine but it will be long enough to reach the solenoid and the connector is the same between turbo or N/A - Mike

Hi Guys, she been in the main dealers in canterbury UK for 3 weeks now! they have removed head and had it skimmed, replaced etm, turbos been overhauled, wiring harness has been spliced with new wires, coil packs replaced, new cambelt and fluids all round. can't wait for the bill, pmsl coz its all i can do as the other option is tears
I have had my engine replaced with the 3rd lump, main dealer gave new engine 4 oil changes and today after 65 miles it blew up on the fast lane of the 4 lane M25 in the UK, they changed me £3000 for the original replacement and have never fixed the issue, they then put my 2yr old son, and my wife and I in grave danger allowing this vehicle on the road, should they replace the car ?, it was bought privately but has been in the garage longer than I have driven it. They originally changed the ETM, the wiring harness, the coil packs, the cam belts and all fluids drained at the proper temperatures. how can Volvo let this happen, we could have been killed today !!
