Keyfob question from a new s60 owner

Post by ooster »

We just bought a 2002 s60, and so here we are!

The seller gave us a remote key fob but said he never tried to get it to work, and he wasn't certain that it was the original. On back it shows it's Volvo part 9166200.

Assuming this is the correct part, is there a way for me to reprogram it?

I have searched the forum, but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. There is a guy on EBay selling instructions, but I don't want to go through the hassle of trying to get a refund if he's blowing more smoke than the 1990 740 I'm now selling.

I'm sure I'll be back for more critical info and answers, and hopefully sharing some.

Looking forward to enjoying the s60 and being a member here!

Thanks!

Looks like a key fob for pre-2001 Volvo's. I believe the design changed with the new models from '01, but I could be wrong. Btw, it looks identical to the one that goes to my '98 S70.

This is the remote illustrated in the S60 owner's manual: http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/1090/pg117bhc8.jpg

That in your picture is as MIJ states for the S/V70.

Looks like you will need a new remote.

Thanks for the info.

The previous owner finally dropped off the owner's manual, and as pointed out it shows a different remote. Which I may or may not get.

One thing I will need to get is another key, our s60 only had the one. Just found out that a key will cost about $130. Yikes! I've never pad more than $3! I sure hope this isn't an omen of things to come!

On the bright side we just took it for a spin on a curvy road, it drives very nicely! It's the base trim, so not a speed demon, but plenty enough spunk.

BTW it's a salvaged car. I've bought salvage before and to date it's never been a problem. In fact our old 740 was a salvage and in over 120,000 miles it's only failed a couple of times. Early on the 02 sensor died, and more recently some rain leaked down into the electronic brain, but nothing a drying out and wrapping in a plastic bag couldn't fix.. And the speedo died a year or so ago. Other than that it's been a solid performer. And, of course, the headline disintegrated.

On this one the damage was limited to the front with the engine left untouched. Likewise the I had the frame and suspension checked and they're factory spec. The body work isn't the best, but it's more than passable even close up.

That is an early key fob and will not work on your car.
Do NOT buy on Ebay as most of these do not work.
You have to find out from a Volvo dealer which (serial no) fob will work before bidding
