2002 S80 Just Plain Loud Going Down The Road

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 S80 Just Plain Loud Going Down The Road

Post by IdahoBob »

I have an '02 S80 with the 2.9l non-turbo straight-6 engine. I bought it at 100K miles and it now has 215K miles. Good car. Boring, but good.
For the past few weeks I've been driving my wife's '04 XC70. Getting back into the S80 I remember just how dang loud this car is going down the road. Been this way for 100K miles, since I bought it. I've been through three different tire types, new shocks, replaced one wheel bearing, both axles, 2 sets of sway bar end links, alignments, and tie-rod ends. When I was commuting 120+ miles/day I wore shooting ear plugs on the drive home.
Noise is best described as a low roar. It's not wind noise.
Anyone have any ideas on what else to change out, or is this just a loud car?

Thanks, Happy Motoring!

Hi Bob, I have a 2001 S80 2.9. This is an extremely quite car. I would start off by trying to separate car mechanical noise from road noise through elimination. I would put car on a rack and run in gear to see if engine and drive train is making unacceptable noise.
My S80 has 140K on the clock. At one time I put cheap tires on the car and it did increase road noise. I am currently using Goodrich Touring T/A that are extremely quite.
Door and window seals could be another source of unwanted noise. I would suspect many little things is creating high noise in the S80. Good luck!

Bro you are not alone this, same thing I feel when comparing my S80 1999 with my XC90 2005. But I thought bearings are culprit but since you have changed it with no luck...I wonder what could solve my problem. Do update if you find any solution. cheers!
