Irv Gordon breaks 3,000,000 mark in his 66' P1800...

Post by jpr0204 »

Congratulations to Mr. Irv Gordon for breaking the 3,000,000 mile mark in his 1966 Volvo P1800 while in Anchoridge, Alaska on Tuesday 9/17/13...

A milestone that I feel NO ONE will ever be able to reach again...

I wonder if he took the car up the Al-Can Highway?
This sure humbles me. I just put the 200,000 mile club badge on my 2004 V70R.
I'm dozens of spring seats and sway bar link sets away from that milage milestone.

64K miles per year. I bet that car has had 50 generators replaced on it. 500 oil changes. 137,000 gallons of fuel consumed. Mind boggling for sure.

I wonder if there is anyone out there with a 2008 C30 with over 325K miles on it trying to challenge Irv?

You were pretty close with the fuel consumption and the oil changes!

He was on the cover of Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car Magazine in Nov. 2011. At the time he had a little over 2.9 million miles on his car.
I remembered reading about some fun facts and so I went back and dug up the issue (I collect them all)
Here are some numbers about what his 1800S consumed over the years:

107,400 gallons of fuel
3,316 quarts of oil
829 oil filters
464 spark plugs
156 tires
116 points, rotors and dist. caps
29 sets of brake pads/shoes
29 fan belts
4 sets of shock absorbers
3 water pumps
3 generators
2 starter motors

Apparently, Irv was good at record keeping. What I think is impressive is that the starters, generators, water pumps and shocks lasted so long.

When I stored that car briefly 6 years back and spoke with him he mentioned generators as his thorn in his side. I did not ask him if he got them repaired/repaired himself or replaced in whole. That number would lead me to believe that he replaced brushes and such and only had three that needed to be replaced for severe destruction. Generator brushes do not last a million miles for sure.
He changed his oil more frequently than my 5K used for computation and also got better MPG than I remember for carbureted B20B engines in that car.

I first found out about Irv back in 2002 when he celebrated his 2,000,000 mile milestone at Times Square in New York. Before that, I never even heard of him. I've been following his story every since and have always looked forward to his updates along the way.

It just goes to show that if you maintain something it will last you no matter what. (To a point)

I can only begin to think of the costs associated with everything this gentleman has done to keep this vehicle going for so long.

Irv put it best. When they asked him "how he pulled it off", he quickly and simply said, "I followed the owners manual's recommendations."
