Still rolling

Post by luketrash »

Well, I must say, this site has been great for information about my 850. I use to rely solely on the brickboard when I had Volvo 240s in the late 90s. With the evolution of message boards, the brickboard is getting a little archaeic. Volvospeed is great, but I hate the user interface for their board. This site is the most user friendly and familiar for me to use. It's similar to other boards I'm on for my VW and Fords..

After the last few weeks, I've managed to knock out lots of little items that are all going towards the ultimate goal of a car that's reliable in the long term. As time goes on I'm sure I'll grow more fond of this car than my 960 wagon. I'm still not use to the size difference on the interior (stuff doesn't meet my hand because everything is slightly smaller in the 850.)

So thanks everyone for the information and quick replies to questions that have undoubtedly been asked 1000 times before.

Anyway, a couple of photos from tonight after I was just out taking photos and enjoying having a running 850 again:

I just hope I can get the engine rejuvinated. It's been shifting great since the transmission fluid change. If I can get the compression up and the sludge managed, I will be happy to continue pumping money into her.

You're doing the right thing by going after the main and important things first. It just amazes me that so many people come on here (but mostly other sites, like VS) and do all kinds of mods just to find that when they finally get around to Stage-0, they have major engine or tranny issues...talk about the wasted $$. Btw, what's up with VS today?

Yeah, that's pretty much the story with every car I've ever had.. I buy them 'cheap' and try to hit stage zero so to speak. I don't drive hopped up cars, because I have enough trouble keeping everything running the way it was supposed to out of the factory.

I see a lot of money put into cosmetic things on a lot of cars and I guess if it makes people happy, I'm all for it.. Personally the part of having a car that makes me happy is knowing that I can get in it and drive across the country.

I haven't hit volvospeed yet today. I get kind of scared to post my newb questions over there because people are less tolerant of answering the same thing 100 times :)

Also, you seem to get a lot of Utopia answers, as if you have infinite money to spend. Instead of someone telling me to use auto RX to clean my engine, people are more likely to tell me to rebuild my engine immediately.

The whole reason I bought this car is that it's a secondary vehicle for me to drive to work and use to drive our dog to the parents/inlaws houses on opposite sides of the state if need be. So I don't have anything special planned for it. I'd love to beef up the suspension with urethane and IPD bars, but I typically never own the vehicles long enough to do that. I'm usually spending money on replacement parts to keep things running right.

Not only are they less tolerant of answering the same questions they are less tolerant of spelling and grammar mistakes. One post, some time ago, was criticised by the moderator for lack of capital letters. This was promptly jumped on by some of the regulars and the poor man must have felt about 2 inches high by the time they were finished. I posted a comment about their behaviour and asked if they intended answering the question. My post was taken off - no explanation given!! Consequently I am credited with three posts but you will only find two, and that is how it will stay.

I know that this will not happen on Matthew's Volvo Site.

I would rather confirm rather than condemn and it is by no mistake that many find their way to this site. Organization, helpfulness, courtiousness, and resourcefulness are just a few of the many pluses and attractivness present at MVS.

In speaking fo myself, I have been overwhelmed by the consistently pleasent and patient guidance offered to all in their effort to repair, maintain, or improve their volvos. For whatever reason one has a car, and to whatever end, this forum has been (and is evolving into) an easy and accepting place for all. It is a most comfortable forum!

Yes, for me, my aim is to have my car start-up and run smoothly and efficiently. All else is commentary. And so for me, to this end MVS is perfect.
