1993 940 Car started to overheat for no reason

Post by 98T5 »

There I was 5 blocks from home sitting in traffic and all of a sudden I see radiator steam and fluid literally skeeting out from under the hood, so I race to get home to keep from being stranded so close to home...once home I check and locate the source of the leak and it appeared to be the upper radiator hose attached to the radiator, Here's where it gets weird. :? ...I put a flashlight on the hose and squeeze it and I can clearly hear and see where the fluid is coming from. it "looked" like a cracked radiator hose, which was better than a cracker radiator connection. So I undo the hose to inspect it AND...no crack...no nothing. so I wonder....was the hose tight enough? was my thermostat going out? I have no idea and it's getting dark outside...I was able to rule out any cracks in the radiator itself before it got dark. Also, the electric fan came on right as I pulled up to the house so I know the fan sensor and fan works. And the theromstat needle was not in the red. it was steady at 6'oclock.

Anybody have a clue? any advice is appreciated.

After further inspection I can see radiator fluid coming out the sides of the radiator. so does this mean that my radiator has taken a dump?

If the fluid coming out of the radiator is any where near that hose than most likely the radiator is gone. BUT, do let the car cool fill/top with water and run car warm again to be sure it is the radiator.

yes, I let the car cool. took the hose off, plugged it with a rag and fill the overflow tank with water to see where the water was coming from. and yes, sure enough it's coming from the sides of the radiator like the busted seals on the inside of the radiator and not the connection or the hose. the hose is brand new btw.

Ordered new radiator from ipd today. I wanted to get the HD all metal but money was tight and I need my car back fast. so I'm just going with a replacement for now. also ordered more fluid. good thing this went out before the winter months kick in.

Ordered new radiator from IPD Wednesday FedEx and it got here today. I made the swap in about 1.5 hours. parts including fluid totaled about $202.00 labor was on me. Shops would've charged me well above $400.00 for this job. so I saved a cool $200.00+ bucks along with solid peace of mind.

the 940 is back on the road! 8)
