04 Volvo XC90 Head gasket removal

Post by Buickm »

Hi,

Im having a hard time removing the head on my 04 XC90 T6 2.9l engine to replace the head gasket.
I can seem to get access to remove the exhaust manifold nuts/stud. How does the head come off? can I remove it with the turbos attached to the manifolds/the head, since I cant get to the exhaust manifold?
In essence I need help on the proper way to remove the head.

Thanks!

Hi Buickm, I have recently bought a t6 as a project and done this job in order to replace burnt out ex valves, I can tell you, it is possible to remove te head while leaving the ex manifolds in place, though not easy. You will need a good quality , 13mm (I think) 3/8 socket with a universal joint plus lots of extensionsand more importantly a great deal of patients. 2 of the nuts will need access from under the car with the extension bars and a torch. Ideally you want the studs to come out too. I also left the o2 sensors in and cut the one of the heat shields to remove past the wiring. Once you have everything else disconnected ( there is a lot to disconnect) including the head bolts you can then lever the head off using some handy tabs situated on the head and the bloc. Mine is now back up and running but still with a few minor issues. Once I get on my pc I will attempt to up load a long list of things to dissconnet. ( mine hass the additional complexity of being dual fuel, so there will be a few extras)
Hope this helps
John

Thanks John,
I think I can pull the head with the manifolds on and the turbos. I havent worked on it much but you're right I have to disconnect all the oil and coolant lines that run to the turbos.
I'm not sure if this is the best way but I think it will work.

Hi guys. I know this is an old thread, but I was just after some assistance as I am just tackling this job now. Buick, did you managed to get the head off with the turbos and manifolds still attached? If so, did you manage to get access to be able to disconnect all oil and coolant lines? Any advice or tips would be much appreciated!! Thank you. Steve.

Hi , I guess and hope you have sorted this now.
From memory, you don't need to disconnect the turbo oil feed but you do need disconnect the coolant line from the left ( as you look at the front ) of the head. A banjo with copper washers. Also similar at the end of the head on the right hand side for the CCB heating line
