cruise is gone, could it be the abs module?

Post by mrscullini »

'00 v70xc with 85k miles. the abs and tracs indicators come on intermitently. cruise control worked on saturday, now tuesday morning, the cruise is not funtioning. from the searching i did, it seems this could be related to the abs module. what do you think?

Common Failures:
ABS / TRACS light on
Intermittent erratic Speedo
Cruise control surging
Wheel speed sensor fault code
Pump out of tolerance fault code
This is a quote from a UK site that specialises in ABS rebuilds. I think you have diagnosed correctly.

I agree too. Your ABS unit with TRACS can be rebuilt by Victor Rocha for about $150, including shipping if you live in the U.S....well worth it.

so i have had the abs/tracs light come on intermittently. last night i disconnected the battery and left it disconnected overnight (as a side note, be sure to have your radio security code handy before doing this). at any rate, cruise is working again. i am attributing this to an intermittently faulty abs module. i had picked up an extra on ebay and now i will send it off for a rebuild and swap out upon return.

stay tuned.

Just one word of advice: get the correct socket for the bolts, or you will spend hours (and I meand HOURS) trying to get the old one off your car. There's a good write up on this site about how to swap it out, it helped me a ton.

IPD sells the tool for less than $10 (ipdusa.com), it's a torx socket, E5, I think, it's worth it.

You might also get lucky locally with the E-5 torx. I called around until I found someone who carried it. It was at a no-name import parts shop but I had to buy about half-a-dozen other reverse torx sockets in the kit that the E-5 was in. (I say reverse because it's a female end...the regular torx start with T and not E). And, I agree that without this correct size socket you'll be wasting countless hours trying to deal with getting your ABS module off and on. Whatever you do, don't use a regular mm socket. Others have done this and stripped the bolt heads and then they were in a world of hurt.

You also seem to want to spend money needlessly.
First you wanted to change the water pump, (not necessary) and now you bought a spare ABS unit. The car runs just fine without it for the 3 days to a week or so you would be without it sending it off for a rebuild.
All you would have is no speedometer for that week, you already have no abs!

come on man, what's your deal with posting grief. this is the second posting of grief today. if you don't have something useful to add don't waste everybody's time with a useless response.

as i seem to "spend money needlessly" you seem to spend time needlessly.

the abs module was 25 bucks off ebay. now i can do the swap all at once. this will now save me time and my time is worth money.

You are spending (or want to spend) money on one of the few things that don't need to be replaced as I'm SURE there are other things with your car that probably need attention like the suspension.
If you are still all original, your struts, mounts shocks, tie rod ends, etc. are in need for a replacement or surely will be very soon.
As MIJ and I have said, I have NEVER replaced a water pump and I sell these cars every day. It's very rare for these to go before 150K miles and even at those miles, very few need to be done.
What year is your car?
If it's a 96-98 with tracs, I'll give you your $25 back for your original, I can use a bad spare, you won't need it (the ABS unit) anymore
