Volvo Repair Database How to test the Volvo 850, S70, V70 PCV System - Video

The Volvo PCV system is one of the most neglected maintenance items on the I5 cars. Failing to maintain this system can cause major oil leaks. I blew one of my cam seals one evening and lost 2-1/2 quarts of oil in just 2 miles. If you do not know when it was serviced last, replace the system today.

This video will show you how to test the system on the Volvo 850, S70, V70 and other Volvo cars.

Just to confirm that you do want to test the system with the glove... When I picked up my wagon with 188,000 on the clock, it did NOT have a smoking dip stick. Most said that it should be fine, I decided to change it because the lines were hard as ceramic. After pulling the box off of the block, the holes were MOSTLY blocked, 80% on the lower and 50% on the upper. See the picture below.

So, my though is that the dipstick will smoke during the early stages of being clogged, but once it gets real bad, the dipstick no longer smokes.

Why are you not a fan of the glove test, not quite understanding your disagreement. You think if the system is too clogged that the glove will not inflate? Is it not true that it can be a tell-tale sign of clogging but not maybe 100% accurate? Just trying to clear things up. Thanks.

I think you posted this comment on the wrong thread. I love the glove test.

Completely misread your second post. I added a "not" in your 1st sentence even after reading it 10 times. Yikes.

The dipstick no longer smoking is because of a blown seal somewhere, the Positive Crankcase Pressure still exists and has to go somewhere.
