Torque Mount Bushing Press?

Post by burnout8488 »

I just read that there is an actual Volvo tool for pressing in/out the upper torque mount bushings.

I know, you can easily make a tool yourself, but I'd be willing to buy/rent the actual tool if it exists.

Anyone familiar with it? Pictures?

The preferred method is to hacksaw the bushing and it should remove easily. You can make two cuts at opposite ends if needed.

Whoops, I must have been tired last night when I posted this. I meant to say for pressing IN the bushings as well as getting them out. Edited original post.

The saw method definitely is effective, but having the correct Volvo tool must zip these in and out pretty efficiently, right?

I guess it would be nice to have the tool but it would only get used once or twice. If I remember correctly the housing had a slight wedge :?: in it for easier installation and many quality after-market parts are two piece also for ease of installation.

In my case I've got a growing family of Volvos, even if I needed it every 3 years it'd still be something worth having. As far as the aftermarket 2-piece poly bushings - been there, done that! Hate 'em. :(

Are the Volvo specialty tools something that are listed in VIDA/VADIS?

I have the IPD Blue Poly. Do you think they cause more vibration? What do you hate about the 2-piece?

I had the IPD Blue Poly in my car and while it wasn't horrible, it wasn't as smooth as the OE. Wasn't a HUGE difference, but at the same time I did notice the difference. If I absolutely had to go with an aftermarket bushing, the IPD would be #1. But, OE keeps me the happiest. :-)

My girlfriend's 850 has a Pro Parts Sweden baby blue poly 2-piece bushing, and it's absolutely a racket. Sounds like a truck, and the engine really intrudes into the cabin.

Hi Burnout8488,

Yes - there is a specialty tool. I have attached the repair document which lists and pictures the tools and procedures. Please let me know if I can help further.

Thanks,
John

Awesome, thanks!

Looks like this is the guy:

Apparently there is a hydraulic press that goes with it.... Maybe a bolt through the center would suffice. Hrm. Any techs used this sucker?

Some folks chose to use plumbing pipe and ends to create our own. The trick is that the bolt is sometimes off center. You can sometimes rent a bearing or bushing press from your local store and accomplish the same thing.
