Thought I would jump in and ask a question as well. I use to own an 850 and loved it. Looking at buying a 2002 S40 with low mileage (68000) for my 16 year old son. Can I expect the reliability of the S40 to be as good as my 850 and is the tranny still the weak link.

I haven't had an issue with anything major - I now have my 2.0T wagon and my in laws have now also brought a 2.0 wagon. The 2.0 wagon has just had a failed alternator belt tensioner pulley bearing - but that could happen on any car....

From what I've read the trannys on the phase 2 are a 5 speed auto (assuming your looking at auto) and they require a specific oil, whereas the older 4 speed will get by on DexronIII.
