1991 240Wagon Starter circuit seems on when it shouldn't be

Post by SeaGuy »

Hello Volvo gang, thanks in advance for help with this curious problem.

Symptom - Wife's 1991 Volvo 240 Wagon non-turbo was starting and running reliably. Last time start was attempted all the dash lights come on as normal, but no cranking. No sound of any attempt from the starter at all.

Diagnosis so far - Checked the neutral safety switch first, which looks pretty new and seems to be functioning correctly. So moving to the starter, I disconnected the small yellow/black wire from the solenoid which I assume is starter circuit from the ignition switch. Weird thing is that I have 12 volts there as soon as ignition switch gets to the ON position, not just the START position as I expected?? I tried jumping that spade on the solenoid directly with 12v and got no response.

It seems like somewhere that starter circuit has shorted out and is being held ON while engine is running and that probably cooked the starter? Does that sound right? Is there a common failure mode that could cause that, maybe in the ignition switch?

Current plan is to pull the starter and get it tested, assuming it is dead. But I need to resolve the wiring issue before installing a new one.

Thanks again for any input on this problem. Definitely not as easy as I was hoping when she came in and said "Honey my car won't start"

Get the starter replaced. That you have 12v does not mean that the current is there to do anything.
The shifter locking circuit relay grounds through the starter solenoid. When the shifter is in neutral or park the complete circuit through neutral start switch switches on the relay. If you turn on ignition and touch that wire to ground ( with shift lever in N or P) somewhere, someone inside car will hear the relay click every time it is grounded.

If the starter was to stick on the noise from that is awful and loud. I doubt your wife could have missed it.

Thanks much for the help! After reviewing some wiring diagrams online I reached the same conclusion. Probably just a bad starter after all. Happy trails to all.

Good day all, I am hoping someone may have an answer to my issue.
my son's 91 240, just recently started with a very strange issue, it starts just fine, but here is the kicker, once running seldomly it wants to start all over again briefly, now I have replaced the starter (NOT OEM) and have replaced the ignition switch with an IPD Volvo OEM, I hope someone may have an answer or point me in the direction to start.
