For what its worth I have gone 70 miles after the light comes on and STAYS on. I want to carry a can of gas and see just how far it goes before it cuts off one day when I have nothing better to do.
I am not an expert mechanic, but I will attempt any repair. Worst case scenario is I screw it up worse than it was.

The other day I was at the pump and the backflow valve (or whatever it is) wasn't working and gas started pouring out from the filler hole. Not a lot - I let off the handle because it sounded odd and I was expecting the click - but by the time I let go the, gas was already backing up the filler neck. I was pretty low on gas and I got charged for 54.8 L. I probably lost a quarter to a half litre on the ground though.

I always thought the light was an indication to add fuel.
.
What's one more yellow light on my dash. Mine comes on with my mileage indicator showing about 60 miles to go before running out. Filling a car up is never in my budget. It gets either $20.00 or at the most $40.00 and a time. I do run 87 in mine all the time. Some day it will quit.

I never wait until the light comes on anymore. I did that once and had to walk to a gas station in the freezing cold....in flats...never again. I can never fill mine up more than 14 gallons but it says I have a 15 gallon tank.

By design all fuel tanks are engineered to leave air in the top for expansion, bla bla bla whatever. So, when you fuel the tank and it get "full" and stops the pump, there is some space in the top of the tank. When you keep trying to fill more gas in you violate that designed space and can cause issues.instarx wrote: Because gas flows down the neck to the tank using gravity, the filler neck HAS to be higher than the tank. This seems so obvious, I must not be understanding what you are saying.
When I pulled the filler neck from a Lincoln town car the next went in about about 2 inches from the top. On the Volvo's the neck is a lot lower. The fuel pump access is in the top but not the filler.

Capacity of 1999 V70 FWD from owner manual 18.0 US Gallons
Light came on with computer indicating 50 miles to empty, and 25 mpg (80 mph)
Drove another 12 miles, then filled with 17.6 gallons, so approx 1 gallon to empty when light came on. 50 miles to empty optimistic, perhaps

Wow...80. Is that the speed limit in NYC? 80+ in VA is considered reckless driving and is an arrestable offense.
