update- problem fixed!!
I thought it was the whole assembly...took the trim off and got in there and tested everything- nothing wrong. Tested the bulb for good measure. It was fine...tightened everything up and put the bulb back in...doesn't work...bang on the outside of the light fixture- the light comes on. Hmmm....crazy!!
On a whim, I tested the bulb gain, this time giving it a few taps as I did so. This is when I found the problem. The bulb was shorting in the base. As long as it wasn't in the socket real tight it worked. Once I pulled the socket metal bits together to give it a better, more snug fit the bulb quit working. The bulb it appears had a short in its base. I changed the bulb and all is well now. Several months of taking this thing apart and busting my knuckles and all it was, was the bulb. If anyone else is going through something similar- think simple. Just replace the bulb and see if that makes a difference!!
