I have a 1983 760GLE with an automatic transmission... was really hoping to convert it to a 5 speed manual, but... It has the D24T. Would this use the same trans as a gas engine or is the bolt pattern/gearing different?

The D24/D24T is a different bolt pattern as it is Audi/VW sourced engine.
I have no idea where you can find it. Erie Vovo and SOuthern Vovo are places to start. I have no idea if they keep many early 700 parts.

Hmm wonder if you could just bolt up a VW/Audi 'box and flywheel/clutch and see if that fits. Manual swaps are relatively easy apart from pedal assemblies and hydraulics for the slave cylinder; or was it a cable 'box in the Volvo?

There were no RWD VW/Audi products over here.
I worked on these when they were new but there were few. I think they were cable clutches in 700's just like the 240's with D24's. 700's got hydraulic clutch hardware for gas motors.

Some of the Audi products like the 100 series were North South installations with gearboxes to suit and FWD much like Subaru gearboxes.
To be honest I can't think of a RWD VW/Audi product marketed here during that era either.
