Yeah they CLEAR codes very well, but depending on which year you have reading them can be challenging.
As yours is '96 that's early as far as compatability. The later cars seem to work better. My 2000 V70 reads 4 throttle codes with a faulty throttle installed so that's not bad.

I've found that if you trigger a code, fix the issue and still have the light some of the scanners won't see the code because the condition is no longer there. The light would eventually turn it self off. I tested this some by running my car, unplugging the maf to trigger a P0102. Scanner picked up the code while the engine was still running (it stalled pretty quick though). I plugged the MAF back in, started the car and the CEL was on but no codes would pull. Cleared the code, cel went out and stayed out.

Would this set up read boost levels for a car( 2000 C70 hpt) if the car doesn't have a boost gauge on the dash?

The boost sensor is already reporting to the ECM. The vacuum guage becomes a boost sensor as boost goes on and off.
When the same screen I posted above is connected to my S60 AWD it constantly changes state from Vacuum to Boost and the guage name/scale changes (so cool) depending on throttle/ load.

I've been using Torque for years. First with my HTC Hero and now with my Samsung Galaxy S2. I use an ELM 327 OBDII tool. In fact I have kept my old phone (HTC Hero) around to keep as a dedicated data tool for the car. It is also fun to use Torque's HUD mode to display data on the windshield while driving.
I'll echo that this was a great buy for me. I've been using this on my 1997 Volvo 850. I just got a 2013 C30 and I haven't used the OBD II tool or Torque on it yet.
Also, it is helpful to have this tool in your car so when someone else's check engine light comes on you can help.
Also, Tech support from the Torque developer himself has been great.

I just got an ELM327 adapter(~12)and torque for android(4.95). It is pretty cool though I haven't had that much time to tinker with it. It pulls a lot of stats and information, but I'm not 100% on the accuracy of the reaedings. I have a boost gauge that gets different readings than the digital read out from the ECU. I'm not sure which one is off. There are add ons for torque that can give you even more readings, and specialized add ons for different manufacturers. I wonder if ARD or anyone who has knowledge of volvo ECUs would put out an add on that is more volvo oriented.

Forget clearing SRS codes; unless you find another thread here on Matthews which for me seemed to require an associate degree in computer programming in order to understand how to achieve this.
Not sure about ABS codes.
They definitley clear the transmission codes as my 2000 V70 had a transmission code the other day; my ELM cleared it as I drove and my 1st and 2nd gears kicked back in.

beigg,
1. An ELM327 device or an ELM327 compatible device (eg, an OBDLink SX, OBDLink MX, etc) can clear ABS, Auto Trans, and SRS codes for your '97 850. Instructions are included in the post dealing with How to read/clear SRS, COMBI, Power Seat, ABS, Auto Trans DTCs on a 1996-1997 Volvo 850 using an ELM327 .
I strongly suggest a slight change to those instructions to add a "ATRA 13" command before or after each "ATTA 13" command. That "ATRA 13" command will eliminate the need for the ATBD commands for ECU 01 (ABS) and ECU 6E (AW 50-42).
To interpret the DTCs, see the section "To interpret the SRS DTCs" in that post. That section can be adapted for each ECU.
2. If you have a WinXP or Win7 computer, have Internet Explorer installed, and are willing to download Realterm, then the far easier (and more powerful) ELM327-based approach is to use volvo850diag, since volvo850diag has "Clear DTCs" buttons to accomplish the ABS (ECU 01), Auto Trans (ECU 6E), and SRS (ECU 58) clearing.
To find volvo850diag, search for volvo850diag.zip in the thread containing the above "How to read/clear SRS, ..., ABS, Auto Trans DTCs on a 1996-1997 Volvo 850 using an ELM327" post. Also, you might want to check out items 6c and 7 in this post:
obdlink_sx_stn1100_family_elm327like_alternative_98_v70_combi_abs_srs_etc_access_scanner_elm327.html
in a brickboard thread detailing part of the actions that Mike91 took to enhance volvo850diag so it could be used with 1998 V70 and XC70 and with the ELM327 compatible OBDLink MX and OBDLink SX devices. Item 6c includes concrete examples of how to edit the .js file that comes in the volvo850diag.zip distribution to add the "ATRA 13" command. Item 7 helps with the Realterm and volvo850 diag setup.
